I've tried to remove my stock muffler without removing the idler wheel or loosening the rear wheel... No luck!

I plan on loosening the rear wheel, remove the idler pulley then muffler. Install Drummer and put everything back. Question is: Can I do all this without a rear stand?

Why can't you remove it??You should be able to get a 4 inch ext. and go through the idler pulley. Thats what I did and it was off in about 10 minutes.

I think the earlier model XB's are harder to do that. I couldn't get to my clamps that way either. Maybe it's due to the different belt setup. Also, I think it depends on how far the clamps were rotated towards the center of the bike when they were tightened.

Fbolt - if you try to loosen the wheel without a rear stand you may end up bending the rear rotor. If I were going to do it, I would remove the rear caliper first.

According to my 2003 service manual, step three of the muffler removal requires the removal of the "idler pully"... this requires loosening the rear axle "pinch fastner" and then unthreding the axle approx 15 rotations to release tension from the belt drive.......

Best thing here is to purchase the service manual....

I ran into the same problem on my '03 Lightning when changing over to the Drummer. BTW: you'll LOVE the Drummer!. Anyway, I had the same dilemma as you Fbolt, and my solution was this: With the bike on the side stand, place a floor jack under the idler pulley with the edge of the jack cup between the "teeth" cradling the wheel with just enough pressure to relieve tension on the idler pulley axle bolt. Remove the bolt, then the pulley wheel, then unbolt the idler bracket and voila! access to the muffler strap bolts. Reverse the procedure to put it all back together. I protected the pulley from damage by wrapping the edge of the jack cup with a shop towel. Worked very well!

I have an '03 Lightning.

I went through the pulley with an extension.

Took about 10 minutes.

You have to use a deep socket and a swivel adapter.

YOU WILL love your DRUMMER!!

I did same deal as Evil_twin. No Problem. Drummer is great, just don't tighten clamps TOO tight around it as reinstalling. TOO much will crunch Drummer it a bit. No real damage evident after 1k miles on it, the crunch may even help hold on tighter.

Thanks all. I do have an early XB, #141 from what I can figure. I have tried the swivel extension thing but no luck. AydenXB9 I'll give that a go~thanks. BTW, I do have the manual; I'm just mechanically challenged.

I just took off my Drummer to have Kevin do some custom work on it for me. I didn't bother fighting with swivels & extensions. It's a 5 minute job to loosen the drive belt and remove the front belt guard and idler pulley. I want to make sure the rear straps are properly placed and tightened upon reassembly. Its a snap with the idler pulley removed. I've had my pulley on and off several times now with no problems. If you pull it perfectly straight off of its studs you won't have a problem.

I just cut the three straps with tin snips and put on a Wileyco (NO straps needed )
