Anyway to get around the $24 and two week turnaround for duplicate ignition keys for a 2007 XB12R?

Yea, take your keys to a local hardware store and get them duplicated. I ended up ordering my keys BEFORE losing them, so if something happened I had spares.

They are some kind of Europen type blank. They sell them on eBay all the time. Two for ten bucks type of thing. Looks like Nik has found a local replacement, but they don't have them around here.

Just make sure to take them someplace that knows how to make keys. It's a bore to lose a five dollar blank because the kid didn't know what she was doing.

Sweet! I have contacted a local locksmith an he has two ilco x270's in stock. I think he quoted me $4.50 each cut from my key.

Thanks, and I'll let you know how it works out.

My local Ace Hardware has been pretty good at cutting blanks for me. They've got one of the older machines that clamps in and traces an original key.

I went to my local locksmith place, and had no trouble getting keys for both my X-1 and my XB. They were in the $4.50 range. They are generic, and don't have the spiffy Buell rubber caps on them. He said he could get them, but that ups the price substantially, and incurs a 1-2 week delay.

These work and ACE will cut them. I got them a 2-3 days after I ordered.

ilco x270

FYI the ilco key was used for the 1980's Volvo 240. Some key shops have an easier time if you ask for a volvo key.

Success! Two ilco x270 blanks now work on my 2007 xb12r. I'm going to strip tie one out of sight on the bike (you'll never find it!) for when I'm out in the wilderness alone. The other one is staying at home until needed, I still have one original left which I will continue to use.

They were $4.50 each cut.

Thank you BadWeB!

Had two keys made at a locksmith for $3.75 ea. Ilco -270 is the correct key blank but TMC-1 is the Buell reference number for the ilco-270 blank.

I gave him the ilco number but he spent 10 minutes going through his reference material to verify that he was going to cut the right blank.

I had a couple keys made at my local locksmith. I don't rememver the cost, but it was less that 10bux.

Looking at my key it shows part number ZD23RCP Silica Italy.

Looks like this:

You'll probably put it in the same spot I put mine!
