Changed out my brakes today on my 12r without any incident. Except when I went to reinstall my seat I noticed that the place on the frame where your seat is supposed to hook onto was busted off.

WTF how does this even happen. I figure I will need to take it to a machine shop and have them weld something in place. Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this.

Also if someone could send me a pic of the under seat so I have something for the shop to go on.

I'm able to ride it as is, but the seat is loose if you pick up on the front.

Don't know if there's enough showing in this pic (from the manual on the Buell.com owner's site)

I won't be near my bike until tomorrow sometime to take a detailed snapshot.

dude, just bend a strip of sheet metal to mimic the original, then screw it to the sub frame.... or just ride it like you don't care.

but i wouldn't pay someone to weld up this job. aluminum is tough to weld; so that means it'll be expensive and/or a poor job.

My seat on the 1125 has been loose for the past 8 months, the only way that thing is coming off is if my ass comes off of it. I agree with Matt just ride and forget about it.

Nillaice that was my idea afterI had some time to think about it. Probably use some sheet metal and hose clamps. Could use a pic if someone has one maybe with a tape in it for reference.

The seat on my old Shovelhead wasn't even bolted down. If I stood up, it would fly off. I wouldnt even worry about it as long as the seat still sits level.

You're kidding, right?

Nice high speed corner and the seat slides off. Big joke.

The service dep't caught that on my 9R when they had to do the safety. They welded it up. I was skeptical about how good a job they could do but I was very impressed with the results. (I've been a steel welder for 25 years, aluminum is a challenge.

I just looked at the invoice. They billed me 1.5 hours for that job. }

Isn't the R tail sub frame steel?

You are kidding me right? Why the hell would your ass be off the seat in a corner. Myabe I am riding wrong or something, but that is quiet possibly the craziest thing I have heard of. I flipped my 1125 over a gaurd rail and down a hill about 20 meters missing a deer without my seat being attached and you know what, the seat was still on the bike.

So tell me where your logic comes from please enlighten us all as to your thoughts.

You still have two torx bolts to hold the seat on .

Is welding aluminium a challenge? YES

Is it expensive? NO!

I had a guy weld my engine case when a mounting tab broke of for 30 bucks, I can not imagine two small tab welds costing more than 15to 20$. the person welding it could more than likely do it right on the bike...

Aluminum transfers heat extremely well. If it is going to be tig welded it should be removed from the bike. Mig welding won't transfer the heat as bad, but if it was mine I would still remove it to be safe.

You could always do a temp fix and just pop rivet a new piece on to get by till winter.

For what it's worth- the seat tab on the subframe of my Firebolt has been broken for over a year now. I've been riding it with the two torx screws holding the seat in place without issue.

remember steel clamps and aluminium frame
will corrode where they meet.same for any steel screws.
get it welded

Don't confuse good luck with good decision making. It's broken, get it fixed.

Design and three point stability, blah, blah, blah.

reallly? ...... c'mon, i mean reallly?!?!

this has become ridiculous. obviously there are several different views on how to remedy the issue. apparently whether or not it even this is an issue is debatable too.... SHEESHHH
but i think we can all agree a few things. that most subframes are constructed of aluminum.
to avoid dissimilar metals and the consequent corrosion, one could utilize a few aluminum pop-rivets.
rivets would possibly be a cheaper alternative to tig/mig/arc/brazing, or what ever your preferred method of welding happens to be.

and to quote the all-mighty service manual: 'after installing seat, pull upward on front of seat to be sure it is locked in position, if seat is loose, it could shift during vehicle operation and startle the rider, causing loss of control which could result in death or serious injury.'

that being said; how you interpret the above, and how strictly you adhere to the warnings is up to you.

the pic as you requested

i hope that what ever remedy you choose allows you to continue to enjoy your motorcycle

Thanks Nillaice, those pics will be most helpful. I had no idea people would feel so passionately about the seat mount.

Isn't fighting on the internet like running in the special olympics? Even if you win you're still retarded.

To some of these people it's an ego builder, but to all it's looked down upon. Kind of like masturbating on an airplane.
