Hey guys,

Where can I get a better than stock shifter for my 2003 Lightning XB9S? I know American Sport Bike sells a shifter & brake lever kit, but $150 is about $100 more than I want to pay for such a simple part. I think the Buell shifter on my bike is too little....only half of my foot fits on it.

Isn't that little nubbly on the shifter removeable? If so, you can just get yourself a longer bolt of the same thread and replace it, then cover that with whatever kind of padding you want.

...of course, I could just be talking out of my ass...only three more weeks and I get to see my Buells again!

The shift lever is actually 1 piece. I dont seem to remember a threaded bolt there.
The rubber boot that covers it, actually sticks out a good quarter inch, in between - cause it to easy rip and break off (thus loosing a good .5 to .75 inches of your shifter foot area.

I have thoght about cutting my shifter lever (the part the foot hits) off and drilling it to put a bolt.

Im just to lazy to do it right now.

Austin, yeah you're right the shifter is one piece.

I seem to remember reading that an improvement for the 2004 models was a longer peg but I'm not positive. Maybe one of our friendly dealers could take a look and confirm that.

Yeah, that would be cool if a dealer could check that out. Then I should be able just to order a 2004 shifter instead.

The tip of my shift rubber is missing on my '03. I don't really notice it but that might be because I've set mine up for GP shifting.

I really need to replace that rubber though, or find a better shifter.

Dirt bike dealers have lil slip over rubber whatchamacallits for the whodeky shift peg.Got one on my 12S.
But it sounds like you need something longer,so maybe the 04 shifter is different

Does anyone know if you can buy that peg on the end of the shifter as an aftermarket piece? I figured (as mentioned above) I could drill a hole in the BUell shifter and put an aftermarket peg on. Is this possible? If so, then where could I buy one?

If I were to do it I wouldnt drill off the old one and put a new bolt on rather I would cut the 'bobble' off the end and get a nice piece of knurled aluminium that fit over the straight peg and hold it on with a couple of grub screws underneath.

Diecut threads around the metal nub and screw a longer piece on to it...You can get the threaded tubing at sLowes or Home depot. Or head over to the hobby shop and check out thier airplane stuff. Some of the round tubing with internal threads for the control rods and such should work as well.

Does this mean no or no one knows? You can't buy them as an aftermarket bike part? I rather not try and make one, but I rather buy it intended for what I want it for.

You can buy a shift peg from an X1 & then simply cut off the present one, drill & tap the hole. Easy as that.

If you like GP style shift,Storz has a great shifter for around seventy bucks.It's longer,bigger and a good looking billet piece(fits my size 13 boot). I have one on both my Buells.......Later Charlie

Cyclone, I think I emailed them about that and they said that it wouldn't be long enough to reach the pegs on an XB unless I had a size 13-14 boot.

All I can say is it works great for me(size 13 boot) I couldn't get my foot inbetween the stock setup. And it really looks like a high dollar piece. The same shifter works on both tubers and XB's,so if you don't like you ought to be able to sell it.........Later Charlie

I'll have to get one when I get some play money. Right now I'm sticking with the essentials.

The good news is that I just started a new job, the bad news is that the overtime is going to seriously affect my opportunities to ride.

I broke the shift peg off my stock shift lever last summer.

I drilled and tapped a 1/4" x 20 hole, turned a piece of aluminum for a toe peg, and whala! New billet peg. Turns my boot black from the oxidation, so I need to get it powder coated. I've got black electrical tape wrapped around it right now.

It's worked since last summer, and I know I've tested it real good

You could try this from Crossroads Performance. Probably more than your budget but you pay for what you get.
