What are the temps like where you ride?
I live in Brazos valley part of TX, and the temps have been over 104 almost daily; this is bad enough but the humidity is very high too. The heat and from the bike just cooks when you come to a stoplight and the sweat stains can be kind of embarrassing, especially when your jeans have a big sweat stain in the crotch area.

Jeans aren't proper riding attire, and turn off your bike at lights once its warmed up.

It has been in the high high 90's to low 100's where im at in atlanta. Its hot as a mug. Hot enough where my bike if i sit in traffic for about 20 mins, starts to vapor-lock and i have to pull over and let it cool down for like 10 min for it to run again

Jeans aren't proper riding attire

Just out of curiosity: why not? What would be proper? Seeing as both scenarios are gridlock not track or highway.

Can't imagine sweating so much that my jeans crotch would be visibly wet. I'd see a doctor about that.}

One is just as likely to get into an accident (probably even moreso) in traffic with lots of cages all around you - and jeans just do not offer anywhere near the abrasion protection for your skin. The anti-jean police up above are just making a suggestion to - literally - save your skin.

Tear and Abrasion Strength by the numbers:

Product / Material // Pounds of force until fabric tears // Abrasion cycles until fabric fails

CottonJeans 4.5 pounds to tear 50 cycles to failure
70 Denier Standard Nylon 4.5 pounds to tear 165 cycles to failure
500 Denier Polyester 8 pounds to tear 180 cycles to failure
200 Denier Standard Nylon 7.5 pounds to tear 275 cycles to failure
500 Denier Cordura 22 pounds to tear 710 cycles to failure
620 Denier Cordura 35 pounds to tear 1200 cycles to failure
NEW Competition Grade Leather 80-110 pounds to tear 1200-1700 cycles to failure
1000 Denier Cordura 110 pounds to tear 1780 cycles to failure
Air Mesh Kevlar 1260 pounds to tear 1800 cycles to failure
Stretch Kevlar Blend 420lbs pounds to tear 1800 cycles to failure

Granted, this data comes from a mfgr of kevlar riding apparel, but you can still see that Denim is low on the totem pole for protective material.

I believe it was Aerostitch that did a similar test a while back comparing materials, if I remember right, they made heavy sand bags out of various things, then dragged them behind a pickup truck and timed and measured the distance till the sand started spilling. Results were similar to above, the jeans were next to useless. I will have to dig that up.

Also, I am cooler in proper riding gear than in just street clothes.

Thanks for the concern Froggy, but back to the topic; it was reading 105 under my covered porch and muggy as all hell. How about the temp in your neck of the woods?

It will be around 110 this week in Chandler, AZ.

My wife custom made me some riding jeans; reinforced with 1000 Denier Cordura panels in the butt, hips and knees....pretty warm, but the extra thickness actually insulates my right leg from the radiant heat.

That was nice of her, aren’t you special to have a wife like that I’m jealous…
I already have three different jackets for alternate seasons and but need a little help on the trousers. I’ve got two Joe rocket jackets, one perforated leather(blaster 4) and one mesh(ufo 2); love the blaster more because of the way it fits. Nice and tight so it won’t move around but lets me move freely. The ufo on the other hand fits way too loose in the arms. The trousers I get need to fit true to size or I won’t be happy.

Try this. It's abrasion resistant and will reflect heat.

Oh yeah...almost forgot what this thread was about. It's been mid to high 80's here pretty consistant. Lots of rain last month but it's been pretty dry since first of last week.

I'm sure I'll get bashed for this, but I don't think a lot of riding gear is practical for riding locally.

If I'm running around doing errands and won't be breaking 30 mph, I wear jeans, t-shirt, and helmet. Riding apparel reduces injuries from sliding down the road a lot more effectively than those from direct impacts. So if I get hit directly by a car.. I'm F*ed either way. That's my justification for leaving it at home anyway..

On the highway however, I wear an armored textile jacket all the time, and armored textile pants if I'm going to be on the road for longer than an hour.

And I wear a helmet ALL THE TIME NO MATTER WHAT as well as gloves all the time - Craftsman Pro mechanic's gloves. (Should really get something with more protection)

It's been getting up around 105* here in OKC lately. Humidity around 35% Everyone here complains about the humidity but I grew up in central MO where it's similar temps and 60%+ humidity this time of year.

It's been in the 100's for the last few weeks here. Humidity is always around 90% or higher. Heat index is usually around 110 or so. I ride mostly country roads to work and back but occasionally go into town and sit in traffic for a few minutes. Regardless of temp, humidity, or any other weather condition I ALWAYS wear my gear from head to toe. Am I hot? Yea, when I stop. I would still rather sweat than bleed any given day of the week. Seen too many friends close up in the hospital with severe road rash and I do not want to feel how it feels personally. They are called accidents for a reason. Had one years and years ago and don't want another.

If you want to see why jeans and tee shirt are no good , even at low speeds have a look at ride2die.com , you would be very suprised at how much road rash you get even at less than 30 mph ,ask me how I know!

90's here. Not to humid, not too dry, just right.

Jeans suck period on the XB's. I much prefer my leather pants when it comes to dealing with excess heat coming off the bike.

Just checked out the site that Lamo had mentioned, www.ride2die.com and I must say, it has seriously changed my outlook on some things. Not so much for me and my riding habits but those of my friends and of my family members who ride.

Temps are in the 90's here(for now). I always wear a helmet, a jacket, sturdy boots, and gloves. I've been wearing jeans but will quickly make that transition to a pair of protective pants over the jeans. On occasion I still wear my assless chaps and my thong.... turned backward!! How's that for a visual?

If you think it's too hot to wear full-protection- don't ride. If you don't believe in full-protection- you shouldn't ride motorcycles.

ATGATT saved my life, and I have yet to hear a defensible reason to not wear full-protection every time you ride- but I have heard every conceivable excuse there is. Unfortunately, it's human nature to not listen to, nor take the advice of those who know better and are only trying to help. It's very sad.

Considering 99% of Harley Riders wear no protection ... I guess they shouldn't be riding motorcycles?

Everyone understands the benefit's of riding gear .. but pushing it like a bible thumper pushing religion is not right. Everyone can have an opinion but don't put others down for not having the same beliefs as yours ...

A guy in a T-shirt and Jeans has just as much right to ride a motorcycle as someone in a full leather racing suit.

Well put. I noticed the other day that the cycle cops in my area don't wear protection besides helmet. Don't know if they're wearing the vest under their uniforms though? I would think it would be mandatory for cops.

I'm not sure I understand the "it's too hot for proper gear" argument when mesh gear is actually way cooler than jeans. It was actually disconcerting the first time I rode in my mesh pants because I felt like I was riding in just my underwear!

It would be a funny site for sure to see my fat ass decked out in tight black leather joe rocket gear with my beer gut begging to bust our of that jacket designed for a 15 year old boy.

Maybe we could pass some laws mandating I look like a fool.

This seams an appropriate place. What pair of mesh pants will best match up to my mesh Buell jacket? 38x32 or 38x31
