What practical/functional purpose does it serve? I'm not sure I'd lock my bicycle up with it. What is the intended use? Helmet lock, wheel to lamp post? They say there are no stupid ?'S but I may be pushing it with this. What am I not getting here?

I use it to strap my Aerostitch suit and helmet to the bike. Also makes the bike harder to move should someone want to steal the bike.

Thanks for your input Froggy. I generally travel light and use the "wire" from the tool pouch for my helmet. I was thinking should I be on a trip, it may serve as a slight deterrent (wheels to frame or something) in the motel lot.

I got a Uly, and it has a real helmet lock instead of the wire, but if someone really wanted it they can just cut the chin strap. At least with the wire going through the helmet, they will need to spend more than 30 seconds to attempt to steal it. Not that I would care if they did, its a beat up $100 Gmax, but it would just piss me off that I got to ride home helmetless more than anything. Anyway, my real concern is my $800 'stitch, so if I am stopping anywhere that I can't bring the suit, I just run the cord through the sleeves then through the rear wheel.

That's all I see it for, keeping honest people honest. It'll stop walk by stuff, it won't deter anybody serious but you'll be back on the road by the time they plan.

My .02 is that if a thief wants it they bad enough they will get it. I am just trying to slow them down enough that I get can a good aim.

It says GEAR lock right on it, not bike lock.

Its for looking helmet and other stuff. And if you have a nice helmet, anyone with a boxcutter/knife could slice the strap (but then whats the point?) but a cable through the chin guard will often stop impulse thieves.

Understood, I'm literate. I was only wondering how others were using it : )

I did use the gear lock to lock both the 1125r and the XB12Scg together at the rear after staying a night in a hotel that didn't have adequate lighting. I didn't expect it to do anything really. If someone really wanted one of them that bad they could easily steal them. But it makes a nice deturrent I guess.

At Road America I saw it being used to lock about 5-6 helmets together then through the bike swing arm as well. Looked good!
