Hi all,

Replaced the back tire on my 03 XB9S, and the rear brake did not work at all after putting things back together. I had pedal travel, but no stopping. I reinstalled the rear caliper, and got a little braking action, but the brake also seemed to be dragging. Any ideas? Could I have screwed up the caliper by removing it? Seemed pretty straight forward...

DANGER!

Check to MAKE SURE your rotor is BETWEEN the pads!!!!! (not to the side of both)

I did exactly what you described when changing the rear in a hurry - and put the rear wheel in place with the rotor to one side of both pads!!!

It'll be obvious by looking.

(just my guess - DAMHIK)

While taking off your wheel you had to spread your pads to take the caliper off, you just needed to pump your brake to build the pressure back up.

Yup. Caliper piston was compressed when you took it off. Pump away until it gets firm again.

Assuming you pumped the brake pedal enough to where you should have gotten your brake pressure back (and if the brakes are dragging it sounds as if you probably did) there is a chance that the top caliper mount bolt was stripped when you reinstalled the caliper. The top mounting bolt threads into the caliper itself and the pin goes through to the carrier. The threads in the caliper are fairly easy to strip, resulting in the caliper being slightly off line; the piston will then push the outer pad into the brake disc at an angle, giving you only partial braking force, and of course the pad will not retract properly either.
HD actually put out a tap/bolt kit for Sportsters for this problem, but of course that bolt/pin is different than those on the Buells.
Check to see if the outer pad is being pushed in on an angle, if so that may be your problem. Assuming that the brake line does not just need to be bled again.

Thanks for the responses all. I purchased a used caliper for 30.00 bucks on Ebay. I am guessing (haven't taken it back apart yet)that I may have done what Pabuell suggested, and stripped the top carrier mount bolt. I'll find out when the new caliper comes in...
Have a great Independence Day!
