Have you tried lubing the lock? Seems like the gradual degrading of the lock may be from corrosion. It's not as if the key broke off in the lock and you can't get that out.

Try the lube and do some gentle wiggling . . . then, when you are done . . . head out the the garage and see if you can get the gas cap off using the same technique.

Yeah, just keep trying a little spray, then work the key in a little bit, some more spray, work the key again. If nothing doing there are other ways around this problem.

There was a thread about this on another forum. There was a response from someone who works in the factory that makes the locks. He recommended graphite powder. I started using that a month ago so I can't really tell you that it's the solution. I can tell you that lithium grease is not a permanent solution, nor is WD40.

Court: tsk, tsk, tsk.

Get your mind out of the gutter you folks . . . the key gets hung up in the little tumblers in the lock . . as you are working it in. . . ease it toward the smooth (backside) of the key and rock it gently. . . it'll work.

If the key wont work with wiggling, I put graphite powder in the lock. WD-40 or grease don't belong in tumblers. After putting the powder in I use a lock pick to move each tumbler in and out a few times to work the graphite in. A word of caution here as the tumbler is standing on end, use a very small amount of graphite.

I was having a similar problem and lubed the lock good but it seems as if the plastic part that actually holds the gas cap into the tank fits a little too tight??? My key goes in/out fine but its hard to twist. Tried putting the cap in backwards but still the same.

Buell2001b, have you tried to use the other key they supplied you with? You may have dropped that one or sat on it where it may have bent a little....just a thought since it has happened to me when I used to have my Triumph T-509...

+1 for graphite

If the lock does freeze solid you can remove the cap with a flat head screwdriver and a lot of force.

I found this out when my bike was vandalized the dealer used a screwdriver in the lock to break the tumblers. Took less than 5 minutes.

Be careful doing this technique and make Damn sure you use a good flat head if the tip breaks off inside your really screwed.}

Remember, or trust our experience, WD40 is a temporary fix. Go with graphite.

My experience on other vehicles is that WD is needed to displace the moisture, free things up and allow the key to both go in and turn.

After its working you should squirt in Lock Ease or a similar graphite product to keep it working.
