We started the day fixing my roommate's S1 and getting her ready to ride all weekend.
We put 60 miles on 'em both freeway and side road twisties, not beating on it, just cruisin'.....

I was goin about 40 into a tunnel and cracked the throttle for a little echo effect- you know. and right after i went about 100 yards at regular throttle in 3rd gear. The bike lost power and felt exactly like I ran outta gas. As soon as I got it pulled over, it died!
After pushing it into a Burger King parking lot, checked the gas (over half a tank) I tried to start it- nothing happened!

my lights work, blinkers, tach/speedo jump when i turn the key, but nothing.....

no starter click, no noise at all?!?

so i sat in the burger king parkin lot for 3 hours, while my roommate went back to get the truck.

Any ideas?
just a thought- the lean/bank shutoff switch gives the same symptoms- but i tried everything i could w/out tools handy and had no luck.

any advise to help salvage my weekend riding would be great!

Does that bike have a kick stand switch? I never had one, but have heard of that switch failing causing what you described.

I read the other post where you dropped the bike, same symptoms as the b/a sensor? Maybe try to jump out the sensor and see if it will start and run. Might get ya by till you can get to the dealer.

it has one, and it works (i know because ive left the kickstand down) all it does is kill it if you let out the clutch while in gear.

ive tried starting it in gear and in nuetral, nothing.

All those shut-off sensors are cleared by engine run switch being switched on and off and on again so rule them out for now.

It died while running isn't usually battery but that would be voltage regulator issues. You'd get clicks for a while. I think there's a check engine code for that so rule that out for now.

Fuses and diodes, figure you've checked them. There's a main fuse under the seat that affects the ignition. I don't know whether that shuts off everything when it goes or just the ignition. Somebody else help here.

No click noise indicates relays. There's actually two clicks, relay and solenoid. Not sure of this but I've seen it recommended: switch them around, see if that changes anything. (That's the left side "fuse box".)

Also look for broken/worn wires under the relays. They're jammed in pretty tight. On my bolt, the green wire was almost worn through. That's the one to the starter solenoid.

theres 3 grey boxes in the left "fuse box" two on top and one on the bottom.

any help on which is which? which i should switch?

(yes i should have a shop manual, but i dont. i just ordered one, but it doesnt help me tonight)

whats the best way to remove the seat? it seems like im gonna break/rip it trying to un-screw the two bolts on the back.

ill post any/all updates
thanks, so far!

Just fold the corners of the seat back and unscrew the bolts. Once they're out gently lift the back of the seat and carefully slide it backwards. Once you get it out you'll see what holds it down. Careful with that paint, speaking from experience.

I believe the relays are stamped on the inside cover of the box, not sure of that.

Anyway, the bottom one is the starter, directly above it is the ignition, and beside that is the key switch.

I haven't done this before so go with somebody who has successfully done this. I would switch the ignition one with the starter, leaving the key switch in place. Seems to me that then the bike should turn over but it won't catch. If that's what happens, you know the start relay is bad. If it turns over and catches, you've got a loose wire to search for.

Seat: just take care with the above advice. Use the tool that came with the kit. Be careful not to cross-thread after. But if you have no click, you know it's more than likely starter relay so leave the seat for now.

My bike did this. It turned out some bad wiring (me wiring the blinkers the cheap way) caused a short in my ignition fuse. I got it back home and soldered up the connections and then shrink wrapped them and I haven't had a problem since.

That's it. I swear I checked the fuses at least 50 times!!! How did I not pull the ignition fuse, Jesus!!! Enough to piss ya off, but hey, at least I know it's a wiring problem.

Now, I've pulled all the plastics off and I can't get the air filter "cradle" (I don't know what it's called). It's the part of the air box attached to the frame. The bottom black piece. It's got the sensor attached.
I took out the 4 screws and it's loose, but the air intake part (looks like the end of a trumpet) is attached below and I can't pull of the base piece.

Any tricks to removing this?

Thanks, so far. I'm almost there........

So, the bike turns over once you changed the ignition fuse? Good, there are two wires connected to that fuse.

There's a GY/O (grey and orange?) that connects the fuse to the ignition relay through a connector. At the connector that wire is linked to another GY/O wire that goes to the RH controls connector.

There's a R/Bk (red and black?) that connects the fuse to the Key Switch relay connector. From that connector that wire connects to the Start relay. Also from that connector, there is a R/Bk wire that connects to the actual key switch connector.

Look for where those wires feed into connectors. I would start with the the wires those connect to inside the relays. Again, look for wear on the insulators.

Good luck.

archangel- thanks. i checked all those connectors and they look good/not worn. most of the wires are bundled and taped, so im not sure if i should unwrap everything to try and find it.....

-also, the fuse only blows when i slow down. yesterday it was when i slammed on the throttle, then let off

-today it happened twice while slowing down for a red light and once in traffic

-it has not blown when im accelerating or maintaining speed

-i found a red wire that goes originally from the fuse box, bundled through a bunch of connectors then goes under the "motor mount" (its the cross bar with the braided metal brace above it) under the air box base and right in front of the seat.
that wire goes into a hole and is connected to what? i dont know- damn not having a service manual!!!!!

-that wire is plastic insulated as well as having a fabric wrap. the fabric wrap is worn off in two spots and the insulation is pretty worn, but no raw wires are exposed. it is also on the back side of the frame and could touch the frame when i slow down?

is it possible that the wire is grounding out, through the WORN plastic insulation?

That should be easy to determine, wrap it in electrical tape and go ride. If no problem its that wire.

ok, so it is not connected to the ignition circuit? if not, that rules that wire out.

damn, i thought i had it.

pull the wires off the coil turn on ign. see if the fuse pops if not then put the wires back on the coil and repeat as you may have a shorted ign coil

Hey, Jake. Sorry I didn't get a hold of you today. I was on my way to meet my fiance for lunch, when I had a problem. I was taking an off-ramp, went to shift down, when I noticed the shifter wasn't where it should be. Got to the top of the ramp and took a look. One of my shifter linkage bolts was missing. Long story short, I was eventually rescued by some one who stopped. He took a brass clip of a duffle bag and gave it to me so I could run it through the linkage and make it to SPHD. Never made it to lunch, but all's well, now.

I am missing a piece of my shift linkage too. I don't care, I just get off the bike if I think I need a gear lower than 5th : )

Good to hear you made it to a shop, though. It coulda been a Baaaaaad situation.

I gave up on trying to find the wire myself and handed my bike over to a buddy. He runs a private shop in west St Paul and does fabrication from plastic welding to complete custom chopper builds.

I wanted to fix it myself, but when it comes to electrical, all I know is frustration.

Thanks for your help, though guys!

I learned more about my bike from this than I ever would've if my bike never broke down.

Sorry to chime in late, but you may want to check how tight the grounds are. If you get the problem at low speed, then that is when the bike is vibrating the most. Tighten the ground connections, check the battery terminal connections for tightness, and then if it is not that, let your buddy go to town hunting down wiring issues.

I checked grounds as well as any other wires that I could get to, too. Man, I just got this bike!!! Ughhh it's frustrating!!!!

Now my buddy has it, I'm outta town, holding my breth untill he calls, saying that he fixed it.

I am freaking out!!!

So, if it only blows when you let up on the throttle, could it have something to do with the exhaust servo?
