What if I change the seat, am I messing with H-D's intellectual property?

I used to think carbs were barely controlled fuel leaks and FI was the stuff!!!

However, I don't want/need a vehicle that has to be hooked to a computer to find out what is wrong with it....

My next Harley and most likely my next vehicle will have a carb on it!!

well we all still have options. there is still directlink. all you need is the key from them. the ecmspy cable works with it fine. i have tested that.

get your ecm key from AL @ American Sport Bike

now get the direct link new program free.
technoresearch.com.

buell race tuner there thats the file. plug the key into the laptop plug the cable with the vcp driver in. and fetch the ecmdata. dont loose your key.

you now have a working system . sure its locked to a single bike but it will work .

guess i have to call gimberto to have a talk with him again to add more files to the software and let him know about the other cables working. he was waiting on that info.

for direct link to be as good as ecmspy one was the cable they used at first. problem solved. now they need 8 files added which contain 96 bytes of data.

pretty much the rest of the other maps page and configuration bytes that are a single txt of 8 bytes. then it will be as good as ecmspy.

or get the source code from ecmspy.com figure out how to open it. and learn the data strings and ect.

then write your own.

the world has now ended.

gunter is giving us a code to use to make a new system. soon feeding it to us. its there still available. you just have to read the eeprom file page.

you get it or dont.

i get some of it.

plus i can open and read all the source code pages fine.

there are many lines pages folders all stacked.

the world has not ended.

one program is gone but a new one will pop up.

10 years from now the xb will be out dated anyway i believe. we will be all vintage. i'll be almost 50 then. eek!! it wont matter then.

mike

Sounds like you can still replace the seat but you can't shave it, that would be altering someone else's design. Is that right? You can still replace parts but you can't modify them? Maybe I'll get a knock on my door from Erik when he finds out I modded my stock muffler...that would be cool.

@Andy:

Uh, no need to trash talk carbs. They've worked just fine for decades.

You ride an XB.

Would you like some Jap bike boys to mock you because your bike isn't a state of the art water cooled inline 4? You chose an air cooled pushrod. Now who's fighting progress?

You can do whatever you want with the seat, it's "tangible". The "idea" of a seat on a bike is not something that can be protected.

What you cannot do is claim any part of the design, that "intangible". Only Buell has that right, even if you were the actual designer, the employer is usually the rights holder.

This article might help: http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/Business/Columnists/Ca nton_David/2009/06/22/9883636-sun.html

These laws are international with a few exceptions. So, back to the main issue, if somebody in Sweden would store the files, we could still access them. Sweden has different laws regarding files. But we'd still be taking potential revenue away from the people that built ECMspy. That'd be your own moral decision.

"Uh, no need to trash talk carbs."

No one trashed talked carbs. But before I understood FI, I too fought it. Now I understand it quite well, and would take a FI system over carbs any day of the week.

Maybe this wasn't his point, but in the midst of the drama of the discussion about ECM Spy going away it would seem that his point was that because of this his next bike will be carb'd because of it?? That's nonsense. Besides, if you just don't like FI, you're eventually going to be stuck buying old vehicles...

And I ride an X1 ; )

I wasn't inferring anything other than I want something I can work on without having to plug it into a computer to tell me what is wrong with it or to allow me to fix it.

The cable was easy, I had to buy the connector from one place and the cable from another and hook them up but it cost a whopping 15 bucks including shipping. Cant remember the companies or too much of the details but its a special 5 volt usb connector and a Deutsch 4 pin connector.

Mike:

Are you any relation to the Xoptiinside website?

Where did you get the Buell manuals you are offering?

They appear to be pirated.

I am curious as to how you justify this.

Poor ethics. Mike needs to avoid posting here, period. I'm tired of having to remind him about non-sponsor policy and business ethics. I don't know how many times he's been warned against advertising, now he's back at it. Don't look for them; the problematic posts have been removed.

It is damn disappointing to see how easily some people are willing to excuse dishonorable/unethical behavior, let alone criminal behavior, by the public at large in favor of their own selfish interests.

I strongly applaud what Didactic (Nelson) posted,
Personally my time is limited and my tolerance for BS is lower and lower these days, and even decent folks like Dark Horse Moto and American Sport Bike can't balance the experience of dealing with a group of people who seem to think rowing in your own direction will get the ship somewhere...just means your a selfish d!ck who should get his own dingy.

+99E99!

BadWeB despises selfish d!icks. If you want to enjoy this site, don't be one. I think we may even add a new statement to our terms of use prohibiting the use of the site by any "selfish d!icks".

Thank you Nelson for stating what needs to be stated. I very much appreciate it.

And thank you Court for looking after the integrity of the place. Some people are just a constant disappointment.

I've given him every benefit of doubt, but my experience has been repeatedly disappointing and overwhelmingly negative. That you or anyone may not "understand", especially if you are the type who likes to use pirated merchandise, means absolutely nothing here.

If however you were a longtime and highly respected contributor here, your words would indeed carry some weight.
