Hello all, I have read about the fuel capacity being 3.7 gallons with .7 gallons in reserve. Even if I give the benefit of doubt and reduce the 3.7 capacity to 3 gallons for reserve, I have never been able to add more than 2.5-2.6 gallons when filling up. Just wondering... |

It's 3.7 My reserve light comes on with 1.1 left in the tank on a very consistant basis. The Service Manual and Owners Manual says the light should come on with only .7 left in the tank. The most I've ever put in has been about 3.3 That's as close as I want to come to pushing it to a gas station! |

The total capacity of the fuel tank is 3.7 gal. When you use up 3.0+- gal., the Low Fuel warning light comes on indicating approx. 0.7+- gal. remaining. I have been able to squeeze 33 more miles after the light comes on. Afraid to push it beyond that. I think the most I have put in the tank is about 3.3 gal. Maybe Buell was nice enough to give us a little bit of a "margin of safety" with the fuel gauge so we are less likely to run out of gas. edited by xb9er on February 26, 2004 |

Thanks! I generally fill up within 5-10 miles of the light coming on...perhaps I should leave it alone a little be longer and and see. Chainsaw indicates 1.1 is what he gets which adds up to the 2.5-2.6 I normally fill up with. Again...appreciate the feedback. |

My low fuel light always comes on w/1.0 gallon left as "reserve", so it looks like there's a bit of variation. I suspect it's something like speedos - set to read a little high from the factory. Better than having a "late" reserve light frankly. Is it on the SV's where the low fuel light starts to blink and get brighter if you ignore it and keep riding? -Geof edited by geofg on February 26, 2004 |

How close to the ring do you fill it? Also I notice when I get within a 1/4" of the ring, if I stop and move the bike a bit side to side the level in the tank seems to drop another 1/4". My longest run came on a freeway jaunt at 0' dark hour of the morning and had to go 4 exits before I found an open station. At the 3.25 gallon mark I was at the ring. Having put almost 30 miles on after the light came on that just didn't seem enough so I leaned the bike side to side and low the level dropped another 1/4" or so which let it take another .25 gallons for 3.5 total. ITs almost like an air bubble gets caught up in the tanks. |

I agree with the air bubble theory. I can fill directly to the lower ring and the shake it side to side and then put another bit of fuel in. It seems if you lean it to the right (sitting on it) you can put a little more in. |

believe it or not the 3 main reasons i bought an XB 1) holds more fuel than sportster, 2) rubber mounted sportster engine, 3)30 pounds lighter than the sportster. also less parts drag on the pavement when healed over, and better brakes are a bonus. |

When my Fuel warning light comes on, it takes 2.5 gallons to refill it (assuming I get to a station quickly). But the most I've put in is 3.0 gallons. I'm not interested in seeing what the tank really holds. |

I had 33 miles on the reserve trip meter and ran out once. I pushed her to a station, were she only took 3.357 gallons. I ride her pretty hard, cruising at about 4000 to 4500 RPM's. |

Heh, heh...on my 50 mile commute to work one morning, no sooner had I left the house, my low fuel light came on. I must have been in some kinda mood that morning cuz I did not listen to that "inner voice" to stop for fuel. I decided to push it. Luckily, I did not have to. I literally coasted right up to the gas pump of a gas station near work! I will not ignore THAT "inner voice" ever again!! edited by fdl3 on February 26, 2004 |

Myself, my brother, and my co-worker all have 2003 XB 9's and went riding together one day. We got into the most sparsely populated area of eastern Ohio I've ever seen. No gas for about 50 miles. My brother's bike ran out of gas 42 miles after the light came on. My co-worker ran out 46 miles after the light came on. We had been riding the bikes fairly easy once their lights came on, so this is the BEST I would expect on reserve if I were you. All three bikes kick the light on at appx 2.9 gallons used. I had filled my bike up at a different stop than they did, so I still had gas. My brother had to ride bitch on the back of my bike to the gas station, where we dug 2 plastic gatorade bottles out of the trash to take the gas back to the other 2 bikes. Still it was a great day of riding. |

I have ran out of gas an a few occasions. Light comes on at about 126 miles. Got as far as 52 miles on the Fuel Reserve once. Had to push it a few blocks though. At that time I put in 3.5 Gal. After about 30 miles I start to look seriously for some fuel, but I live in a metropolitan area. I believe the sensor is in the rear of the tank, as well as the fuel pickup line. My low fuel light always seems to come on when the bike is going down hill with varying mileage. edited by kaese on February 27, 2004 |

Fullpower: my fuel economy My best was 63mpg (highway travel at the speed limit) My worst was 39mpg (highway travel at 110mph till the reserve light turned on) My "around town" average is low 40's in the winter months, 50+ in the summer months. |
