just last night my speedo and tach stop working. My tach was working fine the whole time though. I stopped shortly after I noticed the problem and then when I started it back up everything was fine. After I stopped again and turned everything off then back on the same problem happened again. So currently the only thing working is the tach. All the lights work fine just to the right of the tach though. Any ideas what it might be? I spoke with my local buell dealer over the phone and they said to bring it in which i am trying to avoid. Every time i ride it now the mileage isn't registering on my bike. I think as of right now my bike has about 60 miles more than what the odometer reads haha | ||

haha...only has 60 more miles than the tach right now and i am looking to get it fixed asap anyways so it shouldnt have many miles more and i am NOT looking to sell anytime soon. i plan to ride this thing into the ground!!! no worries | ||

Stupid question I'm assuming, but have you checked all your fuses and whatnot? | ||

Just a guess, but the speed sensor would be the first thing I would check. Or if it's under warranty you might consider the dealer. | ||

Speed sensor, about $60. 2 torx screws on chin cowl, 3 torx screws on sprocket cover, 1 allen bolt on case, couple of zipties, disconnect connector, reverse, you're done. There will be some comments about cleaning the sensor, think one person had success with that. Some comments about checking the wires, do that, probably not the problem. Last thing, take pix of the wire snake pit behind sprocket cover before going after the connector. | ||

It is a very unusual failure on any S bike... so look for loose connectors / blown fuses. Fairly common on tubers... | ||

Ive seen a handful of posts on 03 XB's that have had bad sensors. My 06 SS flaked out on me once and missed a few miles before my destination, I pulled over and turned everything off, waited a minute, still didn't work. It worked the next day so I haven't bothered touching it. | ||

The first year XBR bikes had some problems, but by the time the XBS bikes came out, it was understood and resolved. Not to say it can't happen, its a semiconductor in a harsh environment... just that when diagnosing, it is less common. | ||

Had the same problem with my tuber some years (2, I think) ago. Turned out to be a bit of grit from the transmission adhering to the pick-up, corrupting the signal. Simple wipe w/a rag, and no more problem. Do have a back-up speed sensor on hand. YMMV. Dave | ||

Do the dials move over and back when you turn the ignition on? I had a problem where if I flashed high beam quickly it would kill the speedo. It was an HID high beam. It was suggested that the EMF was crashing the software in the speedo. If I held high on longer it didn't happen. If I turned the bike off and waited 10 minutes it would work again. Turning it off and straight back on didn't work. | ||

Even if the speed sensor is shot, both dials will sweep on startup. It's a different function. | ||

ok so yes the dials turn over when i first turn the bike on. I just took off the sensor and wiped it off. Seemed to have some like milky grey liquid on one side of the sensor and then just oil on it which is normal. I wiped it clean then put some oil on the o ring and put everything back together. I rode my bike in the driveway before taking the sensor off and everything was working fine so hopefully cleaning the sensor will fix the problem. I have pics I took of the milky substance that I will post soon. Thanks for all the help badweb! | ||

Ah, the old milky grey liquid ploy. Hopefully wiping the sensor cured the speedo problem. Because of the milky grey business, might do to pull your clutch inspection cover and look in there. You may need to do an trans oil change. Could have water contamination. | ||

ok here are some pics...they were taken with my phone but in the pictures you can see a grey spot in every picture. It was a small spot and only on one side so hopefully by wiping it off it will fix the problem. I just had a 5K service done so everything should be fresh fluids. Ill keep you all posted     |
