The pics I posted on the link I gave are not my airbox, I robbed them from the KV but I did cut mine just like the first one I pictured. I have yet to cut the vent in my outer airbox cover but the door edge guard is something I'm planning to try unless anyone comes up with an idea that sounds better before then. I'll post pics when I do.

Froggy, but the air that is inside the inner airbox actually comes from the outer airbox where the heat is. Are you saying that the inner box allows it to cool for a split second before it gets sucked in?

i dont know what year they did it, but the trim around the gas cap is the air intake for all new XBs. air should some from the vents in the outer air box (at gas cap when stock) though the inner box (if you have one) into the filter. very little air should enter the air box from the engine.

Is that black trim piece with the vent in it available separate from the entire airbox cover? That would makes things a lot easier (and cheaper.)

No, I was pointing out that any additional heat from the engine would be getting in the airbox regardless of the airbox mod, as its just a plastic cover and not lined with some kind of thermally resistive material.

I didn't explain myself on my first post about the heat. If you look at Biff's first pic in this thread, where he has the seat on, you can see parts of the valve cover through the side slots in the frame. That hot air travels right up under the outer airbox cover and makes it warmer than ambient temps. For this reason I kept my inner airbox cover and opened the front side, along with a 2006+ outer cover w/mesh grille. I still have the snorkel too, since it's a 2004 XB12R. The small fan keeps sucking in fresh cold air and prevents heat soaking of the airbox when bike is stationary.
