Has anyone tried the XB12 primary gearing in their XB9? It is available from american sportbike for about 200 clams. They claim dogged low end response if the 9 isn't all hopped up on mountain dew.

I have an 09 XB9SX and I do a lot of interstate travel. My hopes are that this kit will increase my gas mileage and give me that theoretical 6th gear (or an overdrive per say) as my baby currently screams at over 4000 rpm to get 80mph yeilding a mere 40mpg.

Your bike stock?
I get over 50MPG at that speed.
Buell Race Kit installed.
Also, I used to have a Bandit 600.
80MPH would be at 8000RPM, talk about screaming!

A XB9 with a race pipe at high speed does not scream, it makes music. Beautiful music!
As long as I live, I will miss that sound.

I have a jardine pipe and the breather mod, beside that completely stock. If I ride the bike like a grandma I can get 45-50mpg. Anything next to normal driving is 40mpg consistently.

To be nearly 1000cc, it feels like its working waaaay to hard to hold 80mph. Maybe a 12 feels better at high speeds.

4100 is where everything comes together on the 9. That's not screaming, that's just right. Screaming comes long after that.

A 6th gear would be nice but with my limited highway driving, 5th gear at 4100 is my target and that's about 80.

Your mileage does sound a bit low but there are so many variables to it. You're in the ballpark, but low.

Sounds more like you're just uncomfortable with the 9 powerband and would be more comfortable with a lower revving 12. (I don't mean that as a bad thing, just a personal taste thing.)

Keep in mind that it makes 1st gear quite a bit higher as well. I cant stand creeping through traffic with the gearing of the 12. Lots of riding the clutch.

this info might will throw a monkey wrench into your expectations:

Lots of riders who switch their 12s to 9 primaries are reporting similar if not the same mpg.

IMHO, If you want better mpg, go slower, its cheaper.

I have been doing a bit of testing lately with fuel economy, 50mph, 5th gear is the sweet spot on my XB12. 4th gear drops my fuel economy by about 10%, even more at higher speeds.

You could also post in the classifieds, several XB12 riders have swapped to the XB9 gearing, so someone might have the old parts cheap.

I just did a XB9 swap into my 09 XB12scg about 2 weeks ago. So I do have the XB12 primary gear and chain. Let me know. It's just sitting in my garage.

I put a bigger pulley on my XB12 and it works. A few friends have put the XB12 pulley on their XB9s and find it is what they were looking for. It takes a week to get used to any change like that and then it feels normal.

Hi 03

I changed the primary, similar to the swapping here between the 9 and 12 primaries. I looked at secondary but it isn't doable, even if I could fins a belt with more teeth.
The primary is no harder to change the the belt and pulleys, maybe easier, and with a primary change the speedo doesn't need to be re-calibrated.
