Now, after reading about the snorkel removal for The Drummer, I am wondering if I should do the same on my XB9S with Race Kit and XB12 airbox cover? Or should this have been done during installation of the Race Kit? It may have already been done. However, it is hibernating at the dealership for the winter. Thanks all. Mark Never Give Up! |

hibernating??? go get your bike, put it in your kitchen or someplace nearby so you check on its snorkel, or fondle it whenever it needs attention. 38 degrees and raining means RIDING weather around here. you paid good money for that machine, dont leave it at the store. |

Removal of the snorkel is part of the race kit install. To check put your hand in left side air scoop and feel the top of the inside. I the hole is about 2 inches round the snorkel is still there. But if your hand fits up in the frame it has already been removed. |

Thanks for the snorkel input. As far as it hibernating in the cave of a 2 year old building, not enough room in the garage. We just moved and things are still stacked up a bit out there as we get more organized inside all the time. It's only 4 miles away if I want to pet it. 38 degrees would be a heat wave around here. Must be nice. Never Give Up! |

What are people using to seal the gap where the airbox base meets the aluminum port in the frame after you remove the snorkel? My first thought was to cut the top inch or so of the snorkel and putting that back in. I was also thinking about using some adhesive weather stripping or maybe a piece of rubber hose with a slit down the entire length. You guys probably have better ideas that I have not thought of yet. Thanks in advance. |

Yeah dont bother, Theres no need to seal it as its before the filter element anyway. Cya Stot |

If you seal it you will keep some of the heat out of your intake air. Worth doing IMO.......Later Charlie |

sealing it is not necessary. What Stot said. Cyclonecharlie has some point, though I think minute. If you feel like it, some automotive weatherstrip should seal it up nice. Me? I wouldn't bother. remove the snorkel and be happy |

Noface, the instructions for the race kit clearly says to remove the snorkel when installing the race kit. Is that what your ? was asking? |

no snorkel required Question for the gang: what is the purpose of the snorkel, they went to the trouble of screwing the thing in there, it must have some function, right?? |

Fullpower. Actually the snorkel isn't screwed in at all. It's held in by a couple of plastic tabs and friction. EPA regs. |

I took mine out and reinstalled it just to see what the difference was. Seat of the pants dyno told me that it restricted the air intake, but better gas mileage. 5-10 MPG. I live in the SF Bay Area and we pay the most next to NYC for gas, even with so many refineries around. I want the performance to rip by the commute!!! edited by kaese on February 17, 2004 |

My snorkel is still on mine?? I got the full race kit and 12 box. Now as said earlier its a round black tube about 2 inches wide you can acutally see it if you look into the Intake on the left hand side right? Is it easy to remove? |

Easy peasy, just take off the air box cover and pull out the snorkel.

I am so pissed. I PAID the HD dealer to install my race kit. Now, 5 months later, I go to install the 12 airbox cover and the bloody snorkel is STILL installed. I pull out the instructions and it clearly states that this should BE REMOVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It now is and I can't wait to ride tomorrow to see the difference. SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Calm down, Bruce. Just go for a ride and let us know how different your XB runs without the snorkel. I'm curious if there is an increase in noise due to the sucking sound of more air going in. |

I know I am a bit irate but you know I expect the tech can READ as well as I can. And it is pretty clear on the instructions that you take the bloody thing out! I will report back.

Hey Bruce, Let me know if you notice any difference without the snorkel. I just installed the race kit (with the D&D) and haven't removed it yet. Thanx Jason |

Ya'll just pull the thing out already. It's the right thing to do. Our bikes have to breath, try breathing through a small straw, then remove the straw, better? |

I'm with Glitch. It is the right thing to do. As far as a sucking noise after removing the snorkel, I haven't noticed. At speed I wouldn't be able to hear over the wind noise. At idle I didn't notice anything different. |

I have the racekit and the Drummer. I pulled out the snorkel. I thought I wanted some additional low-end torque, so I put it back in. The results were: I had more bottom end torque, but air was restricted so much that it took much more time to rev up. Wasn't worth the tradeoff. I took it out again. Just leave it out. |
