I know there has to be a few oil threads, alas I couldn't find any...long story short I sold my XB to a friend who asked me to service it and he brought me some Royal Purple engine oil but no primary oil (no HD dealer nearby to buy sportstrans)

But I remember reading Royal Purple was causing premature clutch failure? Is this safe to run and what generic primary oil is worthy... I suspect he wants to run a synthetic if possible.

I run RP 20 50 in my primary and it bows the socks off of any dino oil.

Nobody looks in the knowledge vault!

IMHO Formula+ is great stuff and it's semi-synthetic. I've run it in a Uly and S3 with excellent results.

Blake will strangle me for this, but the oils you want to avoid in the primary have sulfides in them that attack yellow metals (such as, oh, copper windings in stators). There are some synthetic heavy gear oils that many people used that contain them and may have contributed to the kinds of stator failures seen (myself included - in my case, Mobil 1 75W90 synth).

Well it'snot my bike anymore, after reading the Knowledge Vault I went with Royal Purple 20-50 in the engine and primary. Hope I am not too far off.

Unfortunately I found out about the Mobil1 gear oil (75W90) the hard way.
I burnt two stators, at 20thousand miles each.
I'm well over the 3rd 20thousand mile mark, so I'm confident that was the cause.
Blake will strangle me for this
Let's hope not, if so, I guess he'll have two of us to strangle.
