I am replacing the shifter linkage after a crash. The new bolts have gray stuff on them. Is this sufficient threadlocking? The manual calls for red loctite, but that could apply to re-using screws. Not a big deal, just curious.

It's good to put loctite on any screw on our bikes. I've had a few in the past get close to backing out. The temp stuff should work fine.

I wish I had loctite available when I had my first bike - BSA 650.
