When cleaning my bike yesterday (way overdue) I realized that my front exhaust strap was loose. On closer inspection, it's actually broken. Now I might be paranoid, but it seems like the bike is louder and vibrates more now. I didn't ride it today because I don't want to break anything.

My question is will this hurt anything? If yes, can I get that part anywhere else cause it will have to be ordered and wait 1-2 weeks to arrive.

Also in the shop manual it says you have to torque them in a certain order when installing the muffler. Does this mean I have to loosen the other clamps and the torca clamp holding the header to the pipe? I had my header replaced after my wreck by the dealer, any chance that's why it broke or do they just break occasionally?

You're not paranoid.

Yes, it could cause the muffler to separate from the header.

You could probably use any strap that fits.

Doubtful.

Maybe, but I had one just break.

I think it's recommended that the muffler clamps be replaced after removal. Seems like the dealer would know that. I'd ask about it.

You can get by for a couple weeks with a hose clamp from the local hardware store. Check the studs in the header, mine snapped when the same thing happend to me. Be glad you caught this before it did more damage, replacing the studs is a pain.

Your dealer should have the strap in stock, because it needs to be replaced whenever the muffler is removed.

Its possible the strap was overtightened causing it to fail prematurely.

Just ordered th part from my dealer. Of course it wasn't in stock. Par for the course.

You think a hose clamp from farm and fleet will work temporarily if I can find one that size?

smooth the weld on the muffler where strap cinches , I used two hose clamps temporarily , one over top of the first one .

Maybe I should rephrase my question. If the dealer replaced the header and removed the muffler to do so, did they replace the strap?

Being that nobody here was working on your bike, we cannot answer that. It should of been changed, regardless if it was or not.

I don't know if they moved the muffler or replaced those straps. The part was $10 and its easier to pay for it than fight with them. I'll install it myself, but it does look like a major pain. With the temporary hose clamps it wont be bad cause I can feed that thru the bracket, but the part won't work that way. I'll have to pull the bracket off and assemble it that way then put it all on and tighten it I guess.

The rear straps on my Uly are from deepblue. They have been in use for over 10k miles. Also these straps have been on/off/on a couple of times without a problem (your mileage may vary.)

Just measure the length of the straps and order.

Just broke the front strap also! I was nearly 400 miles from home and no where near a Buell dealer.

I installed two hose clamps, one top of the other, to get me home. I called today to order a new front clamp. (had to order it, not in stock )

With road and motorcycle vibration...
Separation of the muffler from the header is a definite possibility. I loosened the rear straps, loosened the clamp between the muffler and header and made sure that all parts were back where they should be and re-tightened everything prior to installing the clamps.

BTW, when my strap broke it sounded like a penny dropped into a bucket. I heard the strange metallic ting but couldn't figure out what it was and kept riding. Found the broken strap when I stopped to get gas.

I use Deepblue Straps.

Cost about a third of the official part, and they are always in stock. The are high grade marine grade stainless.

Nothing special about the Buell part. They just charge more for them, like most outsourced parts.

The trick to keeping everything together is to loosen the Torco clamp, jack muffler tight to the mounting brackets, start tightening from the Torco to the back.

It is easier to install and remove the two rear straps if the tightening screws face the left of the motorcycle instead of the right as originally supplied. Never could figure out why the do it that way.

Thanks, I just put a 6 1/2" screw type hose clamp on till I can get the t-band clamp in. I hope this works, cause the one time I rode it like this it felt and sounded really grumpy. Maybe I'm just overthinking it.
