OK well as many people here know my bike was damaged by the harley dealer while mounting a rear tire.Well I have been busting my @$$ trying to get it fixed and while fixing it I decided like any bueller out there I better do some more mods while shes apart.First I had to repair the plastics which had tri-coat paint on them I was able to heat the plastics "very hot" with a heat gun on the back sides and peel alot of the paint off since it was so thick with all the clear and pearl.I then wet sanded with 1500 then 3000 then heavy cut polish and then light polish and then swirl remover and then wax.Well with that done then I had to fix the wires they cut/pinched on my 1125r mirrors.I soldered them and reheat shrinked them.I then needed to refinish the fairing support bracket which they chipped and tryed to hide with a black sharpie.I bought aircraft stripper and seriously had to use it 4 times to remove the paint I put on it.That didnt even get it all so I had to sand it with 600 grit sand paper to remove the leftover paint and prep it for paint.I used dupli-color bed liner on it 4 light-medium coats and it came out REALLY NICE.While I had the paint out I used it on the middle filler in the lower fairing and then installed new rivets.I then was ready to put it together then I thought I always wanted a black primary and timing cover SOOOO.I decided to atempt to paint them on the bike as I have prior auto body experience "anyone with steady hands and detail oriented should/could do this one".I started sanding everything with 600 grit paper that was getting painted.I then needed to tape everything off this was easy on the timing side.I then got to the primary side WOW it took like twice as long as the timing to cover all the stuff from over spray.I used VHT wrinkle black to paint it as long as you cure it properly it is bullet proof.If you want it get it now as VHT was bought out by krylon and will no longer use the same formula so who knows how that will last.When you paint it it goes on gloss black then it wrinkles.You need to lay down 3 heavy/wet coats with 5 minute intervals in between coats.You should do one side at a time that way you can remove the tape from the decal/taped areas before the paint starts to set up but leave the rest for a while trust me this paint dries REAL slow.After 24 hours the you can cure the paint and it will take longer than one heat cycle for the primary side.I started the bike let it run for 20 minutes and then shut it down.After it cools you can then do the same thing 2 more times then the paint is cured.The timing side cures almost after the first time but not the primary.I then put it back together and soon it will be tore apart again to do the exhaust.I hope this helps someone if they are thinking of doing the same.It was a easy weekend mod to do the primary and timing as long as you got beer and time.I have used the VHT before on my last buell and it will hold up just as good as the harley wrinkle black as long as you cure it all the way before useing.heres some pics.....

I'd like to see the finished product in person to get a feel for it. What color is the paint on the bodywork? Do you plan on doing anything with the header?

I like the front fairing bracket dark. Might have to do that to mine.

Yeah I thought the same thing but it looks like that as its setting up.Once you cure it it tightens up the wrinkles and flattens out the shine to a satin/stock look.

If you where in fort myers you would be welcome to.The body work is actually the stock plastic I was able to remove the paint and polish it.I am currently in the process of either painting another set or dyeing a white set I havent decided.The header will be getting wrapped as soon as I get my new mod pipe built.

Ahhh, so bike is stock color now, that process makes a little more sense-heat,sand,sand,polish,wax. Did you flat black the heel guards or wrinkle or what?

The heel guards are being replaced with the stock black ones that are now out.I tried painting the old ones when I got the bike with auto PPG paint and it peeled right off.I just havent bought the new ones yet to put on .I am really trying to get the exhaust done next as the bike just isnt loud enough for all the white hairs in florida.....otherwise known as biker killers.....

those plastics are BEAUTIFUL.
how long did that take you to do?

1/2 hour into it i'd say 'screw it, let's go for a ride'

The plastics alone about 4 days just because I had to remove the paint.If it was just a good sand and buff 1 MAYBE 2 tops.I used the "3M Professional Chip & Scratch Repair Kit " you can get it at discount auto or advance auto for 95 cents SERIOUSLY.The same kit at autozone cost 20 dollars.

Its this one}}}---->http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/jtsolinsky /100_0579.jpg

When I found it I went out and bought all the kits at both stores by me.Hell these things work and they are the same products we used at the body shop but only smaller.It really is worth 20 but at 95 cents you cant go wrong.

Really nice...

VHT also makes a nice light lens spray. I did my tail light with it and looks great. Very good product. Hopefully Krylon doesn't jack it up.

Firebolt32 Check out my beater I used that VHT nightshades on it's in my photobucket under murdered neon.I painted it with black satin paint as the stock color was a little to flashy for my taste.I hate the neon but she gets good mileage and she doesent let me down.
