Hi all
I have been lurking for several weeks trying to gather some info about the Ulysses. Now that I know what I don't know, I can ask a reasonable question or two.
I have been looking for bike to commute to work. Roughly 30 miles interstate, 15 miles city streets and country roads and 1 mile of hard packed lime rock. Each way.
I have test ridden a new XT and like it very much. However, the prices of 1 year old bikes with 3-4000 miles is about 40% cheaper than new. I have found several '08 X models with the heated grips, hard bags and taller windshield already installed for a very reasonable price.
So the question is basically, is the loaded X as good a commuter as the XT?
Will I give up anything with the higher suspension?
Or is it a positive for highway commutes?
I am not concerned with the seat height issue.
So please, any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Bill.

Get the X, you'll love it! I ride mine 35 miles round trip. As long as it's not pouring and at least 34 degrees, I take it.
I've got the bags, tall seat, tall windshield, Palmer Brackets and a stock of parts waiting to be installed. Traded in a Road Glide on the X, don't miss it a bit!

I ride an XT cause I'm short. Test ride the X. Just get one or the other or both and start riding one of the best bikes ever made.

"Is seat height is really not an issue, get a Uly and save..." huh?

Anyways, get the X. The fender on the Xt looks dumb, IMO (sorry Xt owners!). Plus you get the comfort, suspension and height of the X.

Get the X. Or, buy my XT and I'll get the X.

I don't own either bike, but I have had the chance to demo ride them both multiple times. Recently, I actually rode them back to back which helped me distinguish some of the differences better than I had been able to do in the past.

Here are my conclusions, take them with a grain of salt.

First, I like the ride height of the XT better. I am 5'10" and while the X is ok, the slightly shorter XT is better for me. Not enough better to be the determining factor, however.

Second, I thought I would like the taller windshield on the XT and if I bought an X I would end up getting the taller windshield. After my last ride, I am not so sure. The shorter shield was quieter and was turbulence free. The taller screen was not bad, and if I did alot of interstate riding I might change my mind, but I actually think I liked the shorter screen better. Of course, the screens are pretty inexpensive and there are also aftermarket options that might be better than either stock screen.

As far as handling goes, my limited ride did not reveal any major differences. I would think the XT would be somewhat better with the lower cg and all, but I can't verify that with my ride.

Here are some things I have been thinking lately.

I like the Junior cases that are available from Buell better than the Journey cases that come stock on the XT. You could sell the Journey cases and buy the Junior, but you would likely lose a bit of money in that transaction. Of course you might prefer the larger size of the Journey cases. I think the smaller cases, especially including the sizable top case, would be sufficient for me and I like the looks and the more robust (less leaky) construction of the Juniors better.

Also, while I don't currently ride dirt/fire roads, the ability to do so on the X appeals to me. I have a dream to one day ride the Haul Road. I may never do it, but if I ever get the chance the X would be better suited to it.

So, bottom line for me, right now I am leaning toward the X. Still, if I had an XT I would not be sad.

I really did not like the Journey bags on my XT and now run 2 differnt sets:

Pelican 1430's in town and Ortlieb Dry Saddlebags for when I travel.
