ok, i started out riding an sv650(old body), and i'm looking at picking up a new xb12s... but i'm thinking about how much work it would take to put a 12r seat, tail frame, tail plastic, undertail and tag mount, etc.. on a 12s... i sat on one of each today, and the s's seat wasn't as comfortable, but at 6'5/290, the foot controls and clip-ons of the r aren't that comfortable (but then again, neither are the clipons on the sv, or the 2.5up/2.5 back rear sets..)... i bought my sv naked because it was cheaper that way insurance wise(they wanted almost 300 a month for the half faired 650, and the 12s will cost me less to insure, go figure..) plus i like the naked look, and almost regret building a fully faired sv... ( http://www.svrider.com/photos/sv-pics/gomez/sv650.jpg except mine is tl1000r yellow(ever see a yellow sv?) and world ralleye pearl blue (ever see a blue subaru wrx? i liked it on my car so much, i used it on the bike...) ) anyways, how much would be involved in the parts swap, or how hard is it to modify the factory piece to get rid of that God forsaken tea strainer.... or i could take the mesh out and make a cup holder out of it... that might be cool...

In a word...LOTS. On the 12r the fuses and ECM are up under the front fairing. On the 12s they are under the seat. A stock seat setup just doesn't have the room for that stuff on the 12r.

I found the S-Pegs did wonders on the riding position on the R. $25.00. Knees are not hugging the frame. The 1/2 inch really makes a big difference.

You could put a rear end kit and a cowl on the S to get an R look for about $500.

Just to clarify.
Do you like the feel of the S model because of the lowered footpegs? Like wycked stated, you can just swap out the footpegs from those of an R model.
If the seat of the S model bothers you (I know I dont like the stock seat) you have a few options. You can try see what the streetfighter seat does for you, or you can check out a Corbin. I would advise against the Corbin if you are going to do any 2 up riding though, since there is zero room for a passenger with it.

A couple of people, me included, bought an S model and put the front end of an R on it. Costs is about 600 bucks or so if you order the parts from the wonderful people on this board. Im not sure if that would suit your needs.

Is it the front end of the S model that you like so much? I'm not sure how much work and money would be involved in purchasing an R model, then swapping out the front end with an S model. If you do decide to take this route, let me know - I can sell you the parts cheap (because they are all sitting in a box collecting dust!)

Good luck with your decision, its a great bike and I love it more and more each time I ride it

well, in november i'll have turned 25(a few months before) my last ticket will be off my license(from back in 98) and i'll have more than 24 months since my accident, so my insurance will start to drop, and i should either have my bike paid off or sold... so i should be able to get my xb 12.. i like the s, but i like the look of the r tail section... a lot of work is never a deterent to swapping parts.. to build my sv i ended up having to order a front half wiring harness for the s model, cutting the harness of my old cluster, and building an adapter harness(different plugs and wire color codes between the two models)... swapping out the entire cluster, the tripple tree, swapping out lines(throttle cables, clutch line, entire front brake system) just so i could have fairings...plus i had to build my own mounts for the wind screen, but unlike any other bike i've ever seen, you look at my windscreen, and there are NO VISIBLE MOUNTS.. no screws, no bolts, nada.. lots of work and figuring... rebuilt her myself aftyer totaling her, and i have access to a sheeetmetal shop at work, lots of mil-spec scrap al-u-min-ium ^_^ and ever more spare time... so anything i don't want to buy i can build, using stuff the military was going to throw out anyways, and get paid for it... anyways, i'm tired of the faired bike, its stupid to own a bike, its even dumber to own a bike that can do the kinds of things a highly modified sv or xb can do.. but it is downright retarded to own one and do stupid stuff without wind protection(or it feels that way).. but sometimes its nice to feel like a tard ^_^

Sandbag if you have access to the metal your talking, buy the 12S and make your own subframe that will allow the undertray from the 12S to sit low enough to put the bodywork from the 12R in place. Its what I was looking at doing when the rear framework for my 12S got smashed.

hadn't thought of that... oh, any comments on the quality of the carbon bits available from the factory? and where was it i saw a twin scoop air box cover.. or a carbon air box cover.. or the little "number plate" on the s....

american sportbike, a badweb sponsor (look in the sponsor section) has the twinscoop airbox cover.

I had the s-pegs & custom seat installed on my 12R before I picked up the bike. I was worried about my bad knee and wanted to open up the angle a bit. The s-pegs are great,cheap,easy & relate to the foot controls better IMHO. I didn't like the seat and went back to the stocker. Too slick-I was sliding all over. Anybody want a custom seat they can have mine.

I think the seat to peg distance is longer on an R model with S pegs than an S model when stock seats are used. There are some nice pics & posted info of removing the "tea strainer" in X board under "Rear Fender Elimimator" in the JAN. 31 archives.

my arms are long enough i can probably scoot back onto rear seat territory for a little more leg room... one thing i wish i had tried while i was on the bike... unfortunately, the dealership is a bit over an hour away..... and does that mesh grill section come out of the tea strainer? i might make it into a cup holder...if i don't like it, i can always lop it off.
