I have a hunch that the culprit to a problem is the oil that im using.
I've heard word that buell actually says a few oils can be used in the primary that wont kill the stator, but I have no clue which ones.
Is there a buell-corp 'ok' list or something.... Mobile 1? what grade?

~~thanks

I believe there was a specific chemical that is the only problem, cant recall what though...

I have heard people have had good success with amsoil as well as Royal Purple Max Cycle.

I personally thought the bike shifted like a dream and now after my service its shifting pretty bad.

What oil comes stock?

Dealer put Syn3, guy convinced me it was much superior to Formula+. Is Formula+ what was in there stock? If so than they are full of it because it went from shifting perfectly (not butter smooth like a japanese bike but just as easy to do) to taking more effort in the peg and even after 200 miles of getting used to it I still missed 2-3 shifts this evening!

I've tried Royal Purple MaxCycle 20w50, and Formula+

Royal Purple is great in the engine but SUCKS in the tranny. I dumped it after a couple hundred miles and went back to the Formula+

I'm sure there are other brands out there that work well in the Primary, but Formula+ really isn't that expensive. I believe it's semi-synthetic too if that matters to you..

BTW Formula+ is the replacement for SportTrans, so just know that they are one and the same.

Basically you DON'T want to use an EP gear lubricant, like Mobil-1 75W-90, or any other rear end lube for that matter. They have additives that appear to cause the stator to fail.

My vote is for Formula+. Worked great in my S3; works great in my Uly.

Formula+ for about 20thousand miles.
I did use Mobil1 gear oil, but learned the hard way I shouldn't.

I just changed the oil and the primary, and quickly ran into the local dealer here and grabbed Syn 3 (instead of formula +), and threw that into the primary (wasn't thinking).... It was $12 for the quart, so I really dont want to change it, but do yall think its cool to leave in there till the next oil change?

Thanks

It's not gonna hurt anything, but if you notice a change in shifting that you don't like, you'll know what the problem is.

the norm spec of oil on texas is to get 10W-40, but many of y'all get 20W-50....
and reading what amsoil has to say on their site, in swayed to get the 20W-50. It wouldnt be a problem getting a different spec, would it?

Manufacturers give a range of weights due to regional temperature differences. In Florida, everyone goes with the heaviest weight allowable (20W-50) because it's hot here- I'd be surprised if Texas didn't do the same.

There is no problem changing from one weight to the other, in fact, in areas with extreme temperature changes you can run 10W-40 in winter and 20W-50 in summer. Outside temp aside, running a heavier oil provides better protection in high-heat/high wear situations like stop/go traffic or track days. I highly recommend 20W-50 for use in Buells unless you mostly ride when it's below freezing.

I switched about a month ago to Mobil1 V-twin in the primary, and so far I don't like it. I miss the 1-2 shift more often with it.

I'm going back to the stock Harley stuff with my next change.

At least two of us have e-mailed Mobil and asked what they recommended for the primary of a Buell, and they recommended Mobil-1 Racing 4T 10W-40. I've never tried it, but that's what Mobil recommends.

I'm perfectly happy with Formula+ in the primary and Mobil 1 V-twin 20W-50 in the swingarm.

That's exactly what I will do. Too many times I've mistakenly put it in neutral and revved the crap out of it.

I also tried RP Max Cycle 20-50 in the tranny and shifting became difficult..finding neutral harder etc. Drained that and put M1 VTwin 20-50 in and all is well.
