My bike has never been in for service and I have a 2007 XB9R that I have racked up 1100 miles in 2 months on. What do I need to do for regular maintenance? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Change the oil. That's about it.

Check everything carefully, check primary, adjust throttle and clutch... etc... etc... I would imagine the service manual says more.

I let the shop do it, they did great work, found damage to my belt (replaced it) and adjusted everything nicely. Only thign is the shifting is a bit harder but I believe its the Syn3 oil they used and I am going to go back to have them "look it over" (hopefully get them to change it to formula+ free of charge).

Service manual should list it all... and if you truly are going to skip out on doing services through the dealer I'd definetly pick one up.

The maintenance schedule is in both the instruction manual that comes with the bike, and in the service manual.

I didn't need to adjust anything on mine, so all I did was the oil and filter.

The two main things to check are the amount of free play in the clutch cable, and the amount of vertical play in the primary chain.
Clutch cable free play should be between
1/16" - 1/8" and primary free play should be 1/4" - 3/8" hot and 3/8" - 1/2" cold.

Buy the service manual. It will pay for itself on the 1st service.

Yea... I took mine in for its first tune up.. Figured at that point I could sue them if something fell off.

Get this though.. they reset the TPS on my 2008!... 2008, and did the pleasure of charging me for it, and making me wait for it "the tech is just resetting the TPS should be about 20 min"... whatever.
Oil and check for shit falling off is pretty much the maintenance.. its in the manual like EVERYONE said or should have.

I have an 05 9sx and the wife has a 03 9r. Would it be of benefit to have both manuals as far as the mechanic's of the bike are concerned?

About all those 2 bikes have in common are the frame, swingarm, and engine internals. Both bikes got two totally different electrical setups, different fuel injection, fairing and tail section.
