From Fremont Faultline Harley!

Looks like they did a good job. Throttle and clutch were clearly adjusted, oil level was PERFECT. They even noticed a small tear in the belt (1500 miles) that I hadnt noticed (honestly I hadnt inspected the belt yet, but now I will do it more often!) and replaced the belt (free of course) with a brand new one!

Also just saw my pro taper bars are here! Time to go out and install those : )... and screw up the perfectly adjusted clutch and throttle cables (just a few days late for that package to come!)...

Oh and I went with Redline oil, cooling fan still came on for most of the second half of the ride, its hot out and I was stopping a lot though so its no biggy.

Shifting was a bit harder, or just different. Initially I did miss a shift or two but I am fine now. Felt like it took more effort, not sure if its the oil or the clutch adjustment and I am just getting used to it.

cool man....

I just scheduled my 5k service at faultline harley for friday.

They are pretty cool over there... I dropped my bike and broke a foot peg off... rode it straight over there with no peg and got the last set they had in stock... they offered to put it on for me for free with out me even asking... thought that was pretty cool.. even offered to wash my bike after the peg install but I had to get back to work.

Hmm what could cause harder shifting?

Its noticeably harder to shift then before, its not a problem but still I would prefer it be back to pre-service. Clutch I am sure was adjusted but the feel is in the shifter lever. It just takes more effort. They put Syn3 instead of Formula+ (said its better), but I assume Syn3 is what comes stock in the tranny so that shouldnt effect it. It had to be something they did as I noticed it right as I drove away from the dealer.

I highly doubt they are putting Syn3 in the trans.
It better be Formula+, with all the hype about using that to avoid any stator troubles.
Dealers like Syn3 because it has higher margin$, and most folks can be talked into it with the synthetic v. regular oil arguments.
I personally don't think synthetic offers much advantage in the trans, unless you try it and honestly feel like the shifting or clutch action is better for you.
H-D seemed to be very against synthetic oils period until they got their own branded version.
Funny how the ability to make some coin can change viewpoints...
or maybe it is just coincidence.

They probably tightened your primary drive chain, that little bastard has quite a bit to do with your shifting foots feel of how much weight you gotta press get the next gear.

With a good and proper service, you might have everything a bit on the tight side, as I would like to do it when I worked in service. This "might" be the gremlin making you feel some difference in the tranny. I would be careful and pay attention to your bike for the next 100 miles, it should loosen up by fractions of inches to a sweeter spot.

But your tech prolly being like me, would like for it to wear into a buelltiful point of operation after a week or so of riding and stretching things back out after a good service with tight tolerances.

AND MAIN THING TO REMEMBER: you dont like the service, take it back. They should want to hang upside down and slap their bellies to make you happy. Having someone check your primary adjustment is peace of mind and customer service.

Do some research before making broad, inaccurate statements like this- H-D approves SYN-3 in the primary.

Everything in a H-D dealership has a high margin. The syn vs mineral argument sells itself- synthetics are superior.

Synthetic always offers an advantage over mineral, and SYN-3 is a semi-syn, not a full-synthetic.

Absolutely true! Until they had a way to profit off utilizing a superior product, they would not endorse it. Not a very reassuring mind-set, is it?

I took a look at the service sheet and it had Syn3, I thought I was being charged for the regular oil change (I had given them Royal Purple for that).

He said no thats just one bottle for the tranny. I asked about Formula+, they said they have heard the bike shifts better with the Syn3 etc... etc... I said hmm I have heard formula+ is the way to go but Ill let you guys go ahead and use it and then see how it works.

Is the primary adjustment on the 1000 mile service?

Maybe I just need to ride a bit more, although I have put a couple hundred miles on the bike since the service. Ill see if the primary loosens up soon.

Could the belt have any effect on shifting? I know chains can... As I did get a new belt from the service (last one was damaged from a rock).

yes/no:says in the manual to check the adjustment, and if out of spec, then adjust.

zero-lash belt drive er something to that effect. You can buy some aftermarket idler pulley that has a spring incorporated tho if you feel the need.

so might be a crispy belt, but you dont "set the tension" like a chain on metric secondary drive, or any other harley for that matter.

any other H-D product you can adjust the belt, but we have that figured out. : )

I find that H-D's "superspankmyassyn3" sucks in the primary. Like really sucks. Every H-D I ever put it into had noticeable changes in the tranny feel.

When I thought I would give it a shot in the buell for a while it lasted 200 miles as I felt it shifted with no cushion. Water kinda feeling in the gears, really really really crunchy between shifts. And forget about a hole-shot, it will slip the clutch plates you got the gift of raping out a 3k launch.

Formula + never gave me a prob, belrays oils work good as well I hear.
