My Buell tech rode my XB9S yesterday after a servicing and noticed that it was quicker and ran smoother than most of the XB9's he rides.

After I told him of the new airbox cover, he agreed that the change made for a nice improvement over the stock box. Other than that, the motor is stock.

Pardon my ignorance, but could someone decipher that chart and put it in laymans terms? I think I've got it, but want to be sure... Thanks.

HP and Torque plotted versus engine speed in RPM. HP is at the rear wheel. Torque is at the crankshaft but accounts for losses during transmission from crank to rear wheel.

HP=T*RPM/5252

The torque curve shows how well the engine is able to fill its cylinders with air/fuel charge. Ideally it would be constant across the entire rpm range, but effects of exhaust tract and valve timing and even other things cause it to perform better at some speeds compared to others.

Seat of the pants reaction, just add the race kit and 12 airbox and go like hell!

Looks like you picked up a good 4 horses for $35, though it would take a lot of dyno runs in a controlled environment to be sure.

Thats a steal, you won't find much cheaper power then that (except maybe a good tuner that works for beer).

the dyno runs have been done down here quite a few times. and yes consistantly it showed the same thing.
I think everybody is questioning it because usually for 4 hp you gotta pay hundreds of dollars.
it works and thats all there is too it.

Johnny
the actuall numbers don't matter everydyno reads alittle different.
all that really matters when you read a dyno chart is the curves them selves they tell the whole story.
the numbers are far bragging rights mainly.

Thats cool. It would be nice to see side by side dyno charts and out the door prices for the following combos on a tuned XB9:

1) Stock
2) Drummer, 12 airbox, stock ECM
3) Drummer, 12 airbox, race ECM

"HP and Torque plotted versus engine speed in RPM. HP is at the rear wheel. Torque is at the crankshaft but accounts for losses during transmission from crank to rear wheel..."

Thanks. I'm realizing that I should have asked my question differently, though this answer is very good information as well - thanks. I was hoping someone might jump in and note whether that chart showed an improvement for the XB9 w/ 12 airbox over published specs of a stock XB9. And followup responses ahead of this suggest that it does.

I am considering the 12 airbox cover in combination with the performance/race air filter and spiltfire plugs. And of course now upon everyones revelations, removing the snorkel. Waiting til after my 1000 checkup to let the engine settle in...

The money you save not buying those splitfire plugs will help you buy the 12 boxtop.

Midknyte... Here is your answer in the nutshell:

The XB12 cover will make your XB9 about 5% faster for $35.

The same can't be said for the splitfires.

Add a couple more variables?... 12 airbox with holes (swiss cheese version), and the race intake (remove snorkel, replace filter with K&N version). : ]

has anybody drilled holes in a 12 airbox yet.

I haven't just coause I don't want the noise anymore. but I wish someone would with a dyno chart.

drummer race ecm and airbox $570.42

drummer with airbox and I am assuming you already have the stock ecm, it came with the purchase of the bike(orso I've been told) $381.46

Keith (Skully) has and we plan to dyno it then tape over the holes and dyno again to compare. Might be a while though.

He did say that based upon seat of the pants the 12 box made a noticeable improvement over even the Swiss cheese version of the 9 box.

The 12 airbox has the nipple over the velocity stack and eliminates the "dead space" above the filter. Do you think that the swiss cheese version of a 12 would interfere with the dynamics of that system and therefore give only limited or no gain in power?

He already has. When we take it to the dyno we'll run it, and then tape over the holes and run it again.

No I don't see holes in the 12 airbox affecting the added performance induced by the cone. One is flow path optimization, the other is air supply enhancement. Two different things.

Anybody else had a chance to dyno a XB9 with the "new" airbox? I did at Daytona bikeweek at AMI Brute horsepower shootout. Same dyno and guys running it. Last year I posted 80 hp at rear wheel. I had factory race kit then. Before leaving to Daytona I installed XB 12 airbox cover and removed the snorkel as everyone says. Seat of the pants is great, BUT the dyno says... 75 hp. Yep it went down. What gives? I rode it 150 plus miles before dyno run to let the ecm adjust to new airflow. Don't care about big hp gain the bike runs great, don't want to hurt the engine if its too lean.

Coolice, what were the weather conditions last year VS this year. That is the problem with dyno runs a year apart rather then same day.

Do you have running lights on the front or is the blinker on in the photo? The buell IS small enough not to need clearance lights.

Those are flush mount lites and yes they are running lites. I have had too many "close calls" by drivers "not" seeing you. And on the custom license plate holder I have rows of led's above and below the license plate that come on with brake switch. Better to be seen than felt!
