i went to start my bike and had no battery life. so i hooked it up to the charger, and now it just ticks over, as if the battery is only half life, but the charger says full charge. no starting. where to start to look? maybe a wire disconnected? i know this has happened to a bunch of people before. this is the first nice day in two weeks and need to ride today!!

id try another battery.. or try push starting it popping it in 2nd gear to start it up?

Battery can read full charge and still fail a load test (i.e., won't start).

First, get a load test done on the battery. It's ticking so connections are there.

Boost from a car per the manual or a 2 or 3 gear bump start but you'll probably have to do that every time you shut off the engine.

yep +1 archangel.. autozone can do the full test for your battery in an hour or so

i wouldnt boost from a car, im afraid that the car has too much juice and fry the starter
maybe not drop dead kill it the 1st time or the 2nd, but I believe it will give damage, and overall is bad mojo

i put a new battery in and it still turns the fuel pump on, but just ticks instead of turning over.

Some batteries are not sold charged. Check that first.

Your profile shows a Lightning. Relays are under the seat, I think. They click just before the solenoid does. Look for a green wire that runs from the relays to the solenoid. Make sure it isn't rubbing on anything.

Sound to me that the battery is not the problem.... maybe the spark distributution system is out of wack, loose or something.. check the coils and whatknot.
Many batteries are not sold fully charged, but they still have a charge none the less. have you taken your original battery for testing?

Try jump-starting it from another vehicle/bike. If it starts, then the battery is weak/dead.

If you bought a Yuasa battery, the type that requires you to put the acid in it, it is only partially charged. YOu need to fully charge it. They should tell you that when you buy it. Check with your retailer.

Try Sears Die Hard battery next time. It's ready to go.

One other thing is, check the terminals. Put some Die-electric grease on the terminals and tighten it good.

the battery i got was from my father in-laws bike, which was fully charged, i checked with a volt-meter.

Ochoa0042 may be on to something, cause i tried to push start it into 3rd gear, and it just sputtered, never really got up and fired. the ticking is coming from just behind the motor, not under the seat.

What was the volt meter reading?

You need above 12.6.

Your dad's battery may not be 200cca. Check that.

Solenoid clicks but the engine doesn't turn over. Think winter, I checked your profile, battery is the first thing to rule out.

Turning over and not firing is something else. We're not there yet.

ok, i think it had just over 12 volts, i will check again. but even with the battery charger on it, it still clicks. and i have a new charger that putts out extra power for starting. that should give full power shouldnt it? i have ridden a bunch already this year. but it has been a week since ive ridden. yeah, haha, if it doesnt even attempt to fire it wouldnt be the coils or anything along that line.

From what it sounds like, I had the same problem with my X1 a few months ago. Every time I would try to start, all I would get is the cullenoid(sp?) constantly clicking - the starter never actually turned over.

Turns out it was a loose battery cable.

Check the easy stuff first.. hopefully your problem turns out to be that simple!

on the fuses.. what does the ignition controll? because there is also a 'key switch' fuse, and i'd thought those two are one-and-the-same...?
