Well, a gear that is. While out riding today I tried to downshift coming up to a stop sign and my shifter just kept going. Took a look and the upper bolt on the shift linkage had come loose. Got it back together the best I could with the tools I had and started on my way back home. Kept an eye on it for the next few miles to make sure it was staying put and it seemed to be doing well so I slacked up a bit and focused on riding. Well, I shoulda kept a better eye on it 'cause it jumped ship. All that said, who knows the size of the little bugger? | ||

I'm thinking it's a 10-24 threaded screw. IIRC the original was an allen head screw, but any will do. Loc-tite is your friend, a spare screw in your tool bag is peace of mind. For kicks and giggles, when I lost mine I put a longer screw in the linkage and installed a nut on the primary side of the linkage. | ||

Thanks Toona!! After I posted I thought I'd try the other one and, amazingly enough, it's the same size!! Ran to Lowe's and picked up a 4 pack of 10-24 x 3/4 for a buck and a half. Used LOTS of Loc-tite so it shouldn't cause me anymore problems. | ||

Loc-Tite+spare in tool bag+Nut on primary side. Solid advice right there. | ||

I used a zip tie replacement once. It worked fine till I got to a hardware store. | ||

I usually don't carry much in the way of spare parts/tools since I rarely ride more than about 50 miles from home and usually have a cell phone with me. Pulled over and tried everything I could think of including shoving a stick in the hole (I know bad idea but worth a shot, right?). Finally just held the linkage under the shift arm and got it down into 3rd doing that thinking it would be good enough to get me home. Save for some extra wear on the clutch, it worked like a charm!! Thanks all for the advice!! I will definitely be packing at least one of my spares with me from now on and an allen head to tighten them!! |
