I ran my new race bike at Road America this weekend for the first time and after getting the fueling straightened out, I felt pretty good. Then on Sunday on lap 2 I was downshifting for turn 5, and the motor quits. I had down shifted twice from 5th to 3rd, and on the second downshift the motor coughed once up through the airbox and quit. I coasted off track and tried to restart, nothing. The motor turned over, but the starter was struggling to do it. When I got it off the trailer today, I pulled the plugs, put the bike in gear and tried to roll the bike. The motor won't roll even with no compression! I'm guessing a bent valve up against a piston. Am I correct or do you guys think it's something else?

usually the motor will rotate, even with a bent valve. I had that issue last year at RA on my old race bike. If it's the exhaust valve stuck open, it will rotate even easier.
Seems strange(and not good) that the motor won't roll.

When I bought my 2002 x1 with a broken front exhaust valve, the motor wouldn't turn over and there was an audible metallic "clink" when trying to turn it w/ 5th gear and the rear wheel..

I would guess that at downshifting rpms you would have broken a valve all the way if at all.. But that would most likely show itself through a bent plug.

Hope its something simpler than top end failure.
Good luck.

Schmitty,

That really sucks man.

Sorry I never made it back to R.A. over the weekend. I was chasing electrical gremlins on the bolt.

I'd pull the heads, to me it sounds like an exhaust valve failure.

I haven't opened up the primary cover, but I popped the inspection cover and looked in. Looks like everything is in tact. Spark plugs looked good, no damage to the ends. I started prepping to rotate the motor, but the more I look at the bike I think I'm gonna completely strip the frame off and give her some TLC. There is so much grime around the engine and cylinders, it really needs to be cleaned up good. There is so much grime in the oil cooler fins that it's caked with dust. I'm sure it's not cooling to optimum performance. Thoughts?

I've never turned wrenches on an XB so am unsure what's involved in removing the rocker boxes, but if it was my X1 I'd at least go that far and see what the valve springs look and feel like.

If you can't see anything from that point, consider pulling the heads as well. If everything still looks good you can put it all back together for the price of base, head, intake, and rocker gaskets.
