2005 XB12R with 30,000 miles - I just sent it into the dealer (1st time ever) for them to look at what was causing the clutch to act funny. As I rolled into town from work the other day, I felt the clutch almost completely "give up". No fade or anything, it just failed. Of course, my first thought was the cable snapping, but then I thought it was my past coming back to haunt me. About 8k miles ago, the same thing had happened and I found that it wasn't the cable, but something in the primary. I tried to push it and something in there grenaded and the primary case was toast as was the nut and lockplate around the adjustment screw. I replaced everything that broke and put in new Screamin' Eagle clutch plates. Everything was golden until now. The report from the dealer says that it was the primary case cracking which leads me to believe that it is the "flange" that holds the ramp/ball assembly in place that failed. I do the regular clutch intervals religiously as per the huge manual. So, my question is, "Why has mine failed twice... especially the 2nd one in so few miles?" I have three theories. 1) I have CRG shorty levers. The throw on them is a little more than the stock longer levers due to their length. More throw = distance ramp and ball assembly = more stress on the flange. 2) The Screamin' Eagle spring is stiffer than the stock spring. Thus, more stress on the flange. 3) This is a buddy's theory... I run Royal Purple. He stated that maybe that has something to do with it considering not many people run it in their primary. So maybe it's somehow affecting the metal. So is it one of the above? A combo of them? Any other theories out there? Anyone else have this happen to them? TIA |

If you're the only one adjusting them, there's another unfortunate possibility. Might want to review the steps in the manual. There was a thread here detailing some step on the ramp process. |

Don't know on the levers. I also have the CRG shorties and noticed the differance in throw when I installed them so I adjusted to factory specs with them set in the middle (3 out of 6 but 4 would work too) I figured this is best since then I have a few notches more aggressive and a few softer for easier feathering in. Not sure where you set yours at |

Mine are set at the setting closest to the bars. So actually, you have more throw in your levers than I do. Now my head is really spinning! |

I've had CRG shorties on my bike for 20K+ miles with no ill effects so far. I also run a Muller Power Clutch as well. |

Fast, I have not found out/seen exactly what failed. I am having the dealership repair it and am asking them to save the part. I'll post what's up as soon as I find out. |
