I have a 2004 XB12R and i want to replace the clipons for handlebars. Has anyone tried this or know how much work is involved?

I think i would only need a top triple clamp and brake/clutch cables from a XBS which i should be able to order from a Buell dealer. It seems like a pretty easy switch.

Thanks for the help.

John, where are you going to attach the ignition switch? course if you want I will be more then happy to swap your top triple for the triple and bars for my "S", not certain if you do need to swap out the cabling though to be honest.

I didn`t think about the ignition switch its in the on fairing on the XBS.

Looks like the cables definately need to be changed, there is very little play in them.

I`d definately be interested in swaping parts.

I saw my first Lightning with the Firebolt triple clamp on it tonight. It was awesome! There are a few mods that need to be made, but nothing major. I can give you the details when you need them.

Mine are locked up ready for my move at the moment so I can't play around and check right now. If you figure out your ignition switch drop me an email and we can go from there.

I think i like the stock XBS bars alittle better. They are alittle higher and have more sweep to them.

Im running aluminum motocross bars on my XB9S. They are about 3 inches wider and a little lower, but overall very comfy. One problem though cable length. I had to drill a hole the in the side of my headlight housing. It got rid of my bar flex and with the padded cross bar it looks pretty sweet. They also give me more control while doing stoppies.

Johncr250 your going to run into an electrics problem to convert the entire front to that of an "S". All your fuses on the "R" are obviously next to the front fairing, on the "S" they are under the seat.

On the right side directly opposite the ignition key I had to drill a hole to fish my throttle cables through. There is not enough slack in the cables. I also had to turn my brake line straight down because of the bars width. I installed a grommet and it almost looks factory on the headlight housing. This problem could probally be avoided by using stock width bars.Who cares its done now.

I didn`t think about the fuse box, maybe i could fit it into the front fairing? I`ll have to do some reseach, seems liking putting an XBS fairing on my Bolt isn`t an easy change. I thought that it would just bolt right up since the bikes are so similar.

My main goal for now is to mount the XBS handlebar and controls on my XB12.

Mike; that's a sweet set-up. Now, if they would make it with mounts for - say a Scott damper - now that would be cool for a track bike : D

Regading the Heli-Bars for the 9R. I bought a pair and the holes for the ignition switch mounting bolts were not threaded. I notified the dealer I bought them from who forwarded my email directly to Heli. It turns out that the dealer I bought from had also sold two other sets that were not threaded so I would have thought they would have checked before shipping any more out to customers. Heli responded that they had some problems with a couple runs of the XB9 Heli's but the customer (being me) would have to get the holes threaded for the mounting bolts, and that they were sorry for the inconvenience.

Now my rant: Heli bars are not an inexpensive item, at least for me they're not. To have a dealer continually ship a mis-machined product is bullshit. They should have checked any other Heli's they had when the FIRST set were deemed to be incorrect. Secondly, to have Heli admit that they screwed up a 'run' of their product and make the customer correct their mistake is TOTAL BULLSHIT. At no time was I offered a replacement set from either the dealer or the manufacturer, or any kind of restitution for my time and/or expense to have the holes tapped.

This has left a real sour taste in my mouth about the dealer, who will go unnamed, and the manufacturer, who will not. If you decide to get a set of Heli's for your 9R just be sure to ask the dealer you are buying them from to check and make sure the ignition switch mounting bolt holes are tapped BEFORE they put them in a box and ship them off.

Rant over, thanks for your ear.............

Yeah, they should be ashamed but when you're the only one with such a product (as far as I know) you can get away with it.

If they had competition I bet they wouldn't be so careless or inconsiderate. But unfortunetly, it's their tripple clamp or stock or a whole lot of time & money spent making your own.

I smell a Heli boycott. They clearly don't deserve any Buell owner business.

I don't know if I would boycott them. If the clamp made a huge difference in comfort for me I would probably still buy it even though I'd most likely have to deal with "make a quick buck company policies". (such as having to thread an ignition hole myself) It's a small pain in the arse but would be worth it for the comfort gains. I mean .. even though I don't like their attitude, I wouldn't want to remain in an uncomfortable position on my bike just to make a point (and a martyr out of myself).
It'd be really nice if someone on this board could build something and give heli a run for their money though.
