........so it's been the assumption that the headers are made from stainless steel. Can anyone confirm this?

Is there any documentation from buell that states the headers are stainless steel?

Space -

They aren't carbon steel (they don't rust, and are the wrong color!)
They aren't Titanium, (wrong color).
That pretty much leaves Stainless Steel, (correct color for stainless and don't rust).
Though some Stainless will corrode lightly.

.......the reason i ask is because mine are covered in rust. I just wanted to see where/if buell says they're stainless so i can argue that point with my dealer.....

They are stainless steel. There are different grades of stainless. The headers are obviously made from a lower grade stainless.

buy a set of used or new oem's and have them coated.then swap out.then e bay the take offs--problem solved.
i know the need for a warranty, but sometimes it is faster to just go on and fix the issue and be forever done with it.Buell parts seem reasonable in price and the BS of warranty over the amount of corrosion and the grade of SS used is just a waste of time.
your efforts may be better spent in another way.

I keep mine polished, a few minutes once a month with some mothers and they stay a shiny bright gold.

RPM - How bad were your headers and how much time do you have in them?

A magnet does not stick to higher grade SS. 2003 to 2005 uses a higher grade SS. No magnet stick on these. 2006 and newer, magnets have some pull, that means they have some iron in them and that is why they can rust. Lower grade SS in my opinion. Older headers polish up really nice, better grade SS.

Mine were getting pretty bad. They looked like pure rust.

I have 3 or 4 hours into It including removal and installation. i didnt do it all by hand. I used a DA and a polishing wheel. I have a friend that does bodywork with fun tools.
