Thanks Hoot, I'll try to avoid that one, or at least use it only as a last resort.

Metal, I've quit one week today. I was kinda thinking the same as you- no smoking is worse than smoking.

I want a cig so bad I can hardly stand it...

It's the hardest thing I've ever done. I spent the first two weeks watching my hands shake with facination. You gotta keep a strong mental game. The mental addiction is worse than the physical one. They say I'm a glutton for punishment. I went from 2-3 packs a day for the last 19 years to nothing. No patch, no chew, not even gum. I'm always surrounded by heavy smokers to boot. I told them all not to stop smoking around me cause I'll have to face it eventually, it might as well be now.
Just hang in there. It can be done. Just because it's highly improbable doesn't mean it's impossible.

Bads1, thankyou for that extra note. I probably sound vain but I'm terrified of gaining a lot of weight from this. I was one of those kids who had to buy clothes in the husky section. I worked long and hard to become thin (err, not thin but not fat) and I don't want to see the last 6 years of hard work & exercise go down the drain.
I also don't want to lose horse power.

Jason, sorry i have no info on Huston Powder coaters, however, i just had the better part of a ZX7 done locally(chicagoland area) buy a guy who does work for all forms of racing. He has been doing it for some time and has enuff work to book about 5000 tickets a year, but always has time to talk to me when i drop stuff off and pick things up, he has done 2 frames, 3 swingarm, and countless small parts for several different bikes, he IS NOT, a harley/buell guy, and wil NOT do any part of the engine on any harley motor, when ask why, he mentioned that every aluminum piece he has ever done warped, he wasnt sure why, but it became such a problem for him, that he no longer will touch a part from the engine or other aluminum part from a harley, now not sure if this applies to your wheels, but make sure you go to someone who has a good rep, maybe ask around the area, especially car shows, or cruise nights, and hopfully they will be able to point you in the right direction
as far as weight, on just the ZX7 frame alone, powder coating adds just about 10 lbs, my guess on the wheels would be 1 maybe 2lbs, not really sure, but its more than most think, how this would effect handeling is beyond me, but again something to consider, most frames are painted, you could have your wheels painted by a pro, and save the weight, and potential warping caused by the heat involved in powder, plus there are several paints out there that can stand up to chipping, and last very well, plus sometime its more cost efective to have wheels painted, rather than go with the powder, its also eaiser to find a good painter, in some citys
good luck, i think it would look great plus be, different
later
Roger

I'm glad I read this thread. I'm gonna paint my rims. One reason is what Roger was talking about. Another is I don't want to mess with the wheel bearings. Whatever you decide to go with just remember that the prep may very will be the deciding factor of how the (any) job will turn out.

If you want powder done, there's frankly nobody that I've heard of thats better than spectrum powderworks in Colorado Springs. I actually got a bicycle frame done through them a month ago, but they do a lot of custom motorcycle stuff too and its cool. They're innovators in what can be done with powdercoating. www.spectrumpowderworks.com

Thanks for the link Boulder.

There was some good info on that site. They stated that powder coating is not any heavier than liquid paint, because powder coating does not require a primer.

They gave price quotes for coating frames but not for rims. They did have some pictures of coated rims, so I guess they do coat them. They stated there baking temp. to be 375 degrees.

Looks like they do good work from the pictures. They do detailed work as well as the tinted clear coat thats on the 12's.

They're really cool to work with too, when I dropped off my frame I took a walk through with Mark (the head of the operation) and they are METICULOUS. Very intent of doing it better than anyone else, but not cocky at all, just cool down to earth people that run a really good operation. The day I took the walk through there were also a set of wheels there for a chopper that they'd done a cool job on. Definitely no worries about these guys treatin ya right.

I've been thinking about powder coating my frame, swingarm, etc. Whats the consensus here, will it damage the aluminum?
