Speaking of stink... Whats the best way to clean a helmet?

My gear is in need of some cleaning.

Leather I can wipe down, then condition, maybe dry clean if its bad. Textile pants are easy. Gloves I just let stay funky...

Helmets a tough one...

Have bugs in the vent, and everywhere on it, as well as some various mystery splots. All in all its just FUNKY.

Whats the best way to clean a helmet?

Buy a helmet with removable padding...

Or if yours is fixed there are plenty of people who dunk the entire helmet in soapy water. I have never do it myself, but the instructions are all over the internet.

I put my helmet in the dishwasher.. and half fill the washer with baby shampoo.. works pretty well and if you sweat least the baby shampoo wont burn your eyes while riding. If you sweat that bad and the soap doesnt come all the way out.. havnt had any troubles yet!! You will know if you use to much in the washer cause soap suds will be on your kitchen floor haha.. so cut back on the next washing!

shampoo in the kitchen sink and rinse well. squeeze the soaked padding as much as possible to remove excess water. put in front of fan and turn helmet over once in a while. squeeze out more water, let dry for 3 days, squeeze out more water. buy new helmet to go riding on the weekend!: ) all true except buying the new helmet, i used one of my other ones. i washed another one last night.

Scrunch-up clean dry newspaper; pack it loosely into riding gear overnight or for weeks.
Newsprint seems to absorb the stink.
You know the news stinks, right?
: )

When they start to stink it can be from deterioration. Somewhere between 5 and 10 years and I figure I need a new one when it starts to smell.

Helmet stinks to where febreeze doesn't fix it anymore = new helmet.
Same with gloves.

I've got a textile jacket that says to dry clean only... guess it's time because that thing is ripe.

I ran a track day in 106* temps for 8 hours, bagged up my helmet and stuck it on the shelf for two weeks (totally forgot about it being "moist".).

I thought I was going to puke when I pulled it out and slapped it on.

if yours has a removable liner, you can just buy a second set of liners, you can use one while the other is drying from the wash. I swap mine about every two weeks- but that's just me. I can really funk up a helmet....

I use that Helmet Care-it is a foamy spray and works wonders. I switch between about 6 different helmets though. Cycle Gear sells it up here.

Having coached my kid in hockey for 13 years, what I find really works on stuff like that is soap and water in the tub, a good rinse with the hose and then let it sit in the hot driveway. The one area he has a problem with is gloves-you cant't seem to get the stink out of them.

Tonight I was peaking through my latest Aerostich catalog.

I saw this
http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Aerostich-Helm et-Dog-p-18202.html

It is a "Helmet Dog" cedar chips in a pouch to freshen a helmet. It is only $14.

Close Vents and visor. Squirt shampoo in helmet, fill with water, massage liner and slosh about. Empty, repeat. Empty then rinse 3-4 times with water. Open vents and visor and dry in flowing cool air.

I wear a schampa coolSkin balaclava under my helmet that I wash once a week.

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Prod uct.jsp?skuId=&store=&catId=&productId=p354657&lea fCatId=&mmyId=

I work in a shop and I get pretty greasy sometimes. I wash up at the end of the day but still. My helmet still looks (and smells) like new after 14K miles. In my enviroment that is amazing.
