I had about 110 miles on the tank, decided to stop and fill up at a hess station as I was heading in to work. I'm pumping away, get to about 3 gallons, slow down to keep from overfilling it and realize that I just put 3 gallons of diesel in my bike. DAMMIT!

Pushed it off to the side, called home and got a ride. Went back and picked it up with my truck, dropped it off and drove in to work. Project for the weekend I guess. In defense of my stupidity... I have a diesel truck, and that's the only thing I ever go to a hess station for. Water on the brain, but at least I didn't start it.

Glad you caught it. You did better than my friend's brother- he put ~40 gallons of gas in his diesel truck and got ~5 miles down the road before he noticed it was "running funny". Evidently no damage done, but it cost him a tow, fuel filters, and cost of draining and refilling fuel.

He blamed mistake on green fuel hose used on gas pumps at a BP station. Most diesel pumps (at least in this area) use green hoses.

Guess you are lucky you realized it before running(or trying to run)it! You'll be able to drain it out, refill with gasoline, drain again and be good to go.
Should work out!

I heard the Buells run on diesel no problem : )

Seriously though, I hope it won't be too big of
a pain to correct the problem. Is removing the
Fuel Pump the only way to drain the frame?

I tried to stop an old woman from doing this a couple weeks ago. I yelled over "Maam, your about to put diesel in your car." She says, "I know. That's what the dealership told me to use." I tried to talk her out of it but she wouldn't listen.

Saratoga...you buy your bike in Brandon. If so, how many miles? I believe I've rode your bike before it was yours.

what is the breakline-compression for diesel to combust?

answered my own Q: for who wants to know, a quote from wiki....
The air is then compressed with a compression ratio typically between 15 and 22 resulting into a 40 bar (about 600 psi) pressure compared to 14 bar (about 200 psi) in the gasoline engine. This high compression heats the air to 550 °C (about 1000 °F). At about this moment (the exact moment is determined by the fuel injection timing of the fuel system), fuel is injected directly into the compressed air in the combustion chamber.

There's 1 reason I hate BP stations around here- all their pump handles are green, because that's their color. EVERY other station uses black handles for gas, green for diesel. I often have wondered if people would easily make this mistake because of it...

Ochoa0042- There are some retired Harley engineers who've converted a big twin to diesel and IIRC they're looking to go commercial with it. I've said it more than once, I'd just LOVE to hear the idle on a diesel 45 degree V-twin.

Also see a couple of threads at advrider on the subject ("Beasts" forum). One is about a new Dutch adventure bike with a small 3-cyl Mercedes turbo diesel (adapted from their Smart Car). Another thread is on a guy installing a B&S ~30 HP turbo diesel in an older Triumph Tiger. That might be a fun project.

Yep. Last August. It had 5 miles on it when I picked it up IIRC. They had the red Ss I bought and a blue Scg from what I remember.

Ochoa- the typical compression ratio of a diesel engine is around 18:1 and higher vs the 10:1 (?) in the Buell. Cylinder heads in modern direct injection diesel engines are completely flat- there is no combustion chamber like you'd find in gas engines. The pistons have a small bowl
which acts as the combustion chamber. I'll see if I can find some pics.

Yep. Last August.

I very well could have. Every once and a while the GM lets me take a bike out onto the road coarse. I've convinced him that they sit far too long without being started. Hell there have been times where I've had to wipe down the Buells because of spider webs on the damn things.

You'll be pleased to know that they are revamping Buell in Brandon. If you remember nearly dead center of the dealership is what they call "The Barn". They use it for clearance items. It is soon going to be "The Buell Barn". I think I bitch long and hard enough to keep our lovely Buell brand in Brandon.

I get that all the time in my car!

" hey man, that's diesel! "

Yes sir it is! A 1.9 TDI with 46 MPG highway.

If you didn't start it, you will be just fine.
Just drain it and refill.

...and keep it topped up for the next 100 miles or so just to make you feel better, that it's all getting diluted and washed away. Probably makes very little real difference but you'll feel better.

I laugh at people like you. Like Rah7777, I have a TDI. People look at you like your stupid for putting diesel in your car and then you drive away getting 50mpg.

TDI's rock. My wife gets 45+ MPG out of her 2003 VW, and she drives like she's on meth while listening to Megadeth.

I bet I could get damn near 60 MPG in that car by short shifting and staying at the speed limit.

Oil burners rule! We need more in this country.

I agree. What gas vehicle can you put a mass produced tuner on and get an extra 120 hp out of? None that I know of. The available tuning options and insane power that diesel vehicles make can't be matched.

One morning I was REAL tired, pulled my diesel truck into the gas station, charged my card and lifted the gas pump handle, the wify said, "What are you doing with that?" I said Oh! Thanks Love! A small dilution is no biggie, diesel is often the "Petroleum Distillate" in fuel cleaner. It cleans well.
Siphon it out, refill with gas, keep it topped off as stated before, you'll be FINE.

Somebody needs to come out with a motorcycle with multifuel capability. We have a '62 (that's *1962*) Deuce and a Half military truck that's listed as a "diesel/multifuel turbocharged" engine. Obviously, the technology is out there.

If it's liquid, and you can light it on fire...it'll run on it. Literally. Gas. Oil. Kero. Used motor oil. Cooking grease. Bacon fat. Differential fluid. They recommend against JP8 though - something about cylinder heads popping off the blocks or something.

The manual TELLS you to put one gallon of UMO in every 50 gallon tank of fuel, to keep the fuel system lubricated, in case you have to use a 'dry' fuel like kerosene.

Personally, I toss in a couple gallons of citronella oil in the summer. The exhaust keeps the mosquitos away.

My wife now works on post, at Ft Detrick MD. I keep threatening her that she's gonna have to start driving it to work, for fuel economy reasons...and just to see the guards' faces when she gets to the gate! She says "there's nowhere to park it, it's HUGE". I say, "it's a DEUCE, you can park it wherever you want!!"

Yes. The pistons are out of an 06 Dmax that ran low-mid 12's (sadly, not mine). The head is just a random pic.

Yea, the Cummins internals are much bigger mainly because it's an I-6 with about the same displacement as the others' V-8's. The cam in a Cummins is enormous.}

They have, you just can't buy one yet: http://www.dieselmotorcycles.com/

They're supposedly going commercial with it as soon as they catch up with their existing contracts with the USMC.

I thought gasoline nozzles were smaller than diesel to prevent that accident (with cars)? The nozzle won't fit into the fill hole... at least around here. I may have it backwards, but I know the nozzles are different sizes, and one won't fit in the other.

That is true, but gas cars and trucks have a restrictor in the filler neck. Not so much on the bike.

Anywho, drained the tank at the fuel pump last weekend and it runs just fine now.
