Ok, got your guys attention i hope. Scenario: I see a bike on base here at Camp Pendleton with an 'abandoned vehicle' notice on it. I know this bike has been there for at least 7 months without moving (cobwebs all over it, everything that can rust is rust, and no tags or plates). Situation: Got a number on the paper to call that i'm gonna hit up tomorrow to find out what is done with abandoned bikes if they aren't moved or vouched for by someone and find out if there is a way to acquire the bike. But thats tomorrow. Right now i'm trying to find out who this bike belongs to so i can get a hold of them and ask them about their bike and if they would sell it. I want to do this before PMO takes it away (bike is a '06 12R, same year as mine, so i WANT it.) Help: I got the VIN off the bike and was wondering if there is anyone on here that can help me look up the owner of the bike so i can start asking Units on base here and find the guy/gal who owns it. If i cant find anything out by this weekend i'm gonna head to Bigg's and try to get the owners information there. | ||

Marine Corps base. My thoughts are he is either overseas, or just left it cause the guys that live in those barracks go on MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) or simply put, going on ship for 7 months hitting port after port and enjoying life. | ||

Sounds fishy to me. No one would leave an 06 bike without making some sort of arrangements for it. If it has no tags than I would be inclined to say someone has stopped making payments on it, and the repo-man just hasn't found it yet. Why not call around to the local Buell/HD dealer and ask if there is a service record for that bike. They may not be able to tell you who owns it over the phone, but if there is a record of it visiting a shop, you could visit said shop and inquire in person. | ||

I would presume that it belongs to a ground pounder who is either overseas or who has been killed overseas. | ||

I've seen plenty of Marines that get a bike, dump it once, and NEVER ride it again. There was a guy in a different area that i saw got a '07 9R and after a few days i saw that it was scratched up all on one side and he never rode it after that again (well at least 5 months or so). | ||

PMO: is that like military police? Don't they know, or don't you want to ask them? I can't imagine post 9/11 that any vehicle enters any gov't site w/o being recorded, that an abandoned vehicle could stay. Try and ask whoever does the policing,tactfully, might work out well for all concerned. | ||

there was a number on the paper on the bike. I tried calling it and they where already gone for the day, so first thing tomorrow morning i'm gonna call and find out. and yes, PMO is Military Police | ||

What i was hoping on this thread is to find someone on here that works at a dealership that i can shoot the VIN to and they could look it up and find the first person that owned the bike and i would go from there to find out who owns it now. And if it comes out to belonging to NOBODY, i will tactfully acquire it and strip it for what i need. But thats if there is NO record of anyone owning and i am 100% that it belongs to nobody (highly unlikely, but i can wish for a free buell.....right?) | ||

Does it have a base sticker on it? If so go to the registration place on base and check it. Marines do weird shit all of the time, you would not believe the number of abandoned cars and bikes on Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton. They will deploy not make arrangements to store their vehicles and then come back expecting it to be there. Anyhow Semper Fi Jimmy | ||

So you are ready to strip a bike that is not yours because some fellow Marine has just maybe abandoned the bike. Doesn't seem right to me! Should you be more concerned that a fellow Marine may have his bike impounded while is is deployed? The bike belongs to someone and is very traceable by law enforcement. | ||

I would love to find the guy and talk to him about his bike and try to get it from him. And if he isn't willing to sell it, i'll move it and hide it for him. Like i said, i would only take it if he has truly abandoned it and doesn't plan on coming back for it at all. I'm not a Blue Falconer, i'm just a guy that seizes an opportunity if it arises. | ||

Juniorkirk, The abandoned vehicle thing happens alot on bases. I was stationed in Jacksonville, Fl from 2003-2007 and lusted after an International Scout that just sat in the parking lot for four years. The base police had no records of it, even though it had a faded DOD decal. I wanted it, but ended up giving up the chase. Some people just transfer and leave older vehicles. I would bet that an 06 Buell is the property of a younger Marine that didn't park it in the long term storage area. That is pretty risky. If it is a bike that somebody abandoned, some bank is probably looking for it. Good luck. | ||

I called that number that was on the bike and found out some information on how to get it. I have to put something up that says i found the bike and that if it isnt claimed in 30 days it will be taken. After that i can go to the DMV and give them the VIN number and a piece of paper that is signed by someone on base saying that i posted it all up and everything. From then they run a background on the bike to find out if there is a lien on it, and if it's not, i can get a title for that bike signed over to me. So, it's worth all the effort to me | ||

What an amazing country. My friends, from Scotland, who have two kids, one with the RAF in Iraq, the other SAS in Afghanistan, are refused day trip entry in the US. They don't have passport, not required at that time (they are now). All in the name of national security. I work at a plant that did US defense work, now split into two facilities. No parking outside is allowed, they do remove any abandoned cars. All in the name of national security. Some countries no longer allow pics to be taken of soldiers in uniform. Yet, in the US there area abandoned vehicles on bases. Military info is shared openly on the net. No blame here, just expressing wonder. Lot of info here that maybe shouldn't be. Something to think about. |
