The 9S is the one pre 2003 bike that ought not to have a failing speedo.

The sensor is magnetic, you could pull it and make sure it has not accumulated a bunch of metal shavings, and trace it back and make sure the deutsch connector is not loose, or that there are not obvious breaks in the wire.

Bubba observed that it is possible to toast a sensor by routing the wiring for it too close to an ignition wire, so look and see if somebody monkeyed with the routing as well.

Overall, it's probably not a big deal. It's probably just the sensor. The part is not terribly expensive, and the install is very easy.

What stuff fell off? What had to be reset? That might reveal if the problem is with your bike, or with your dealer. There is a lot of setup stuff that dealers can do badly, and a lot of dealer mistakes are blamed on the bike, instead of the dealer owning up that they did something wrong.

I am not saying for sure that your dealer is at fault... but I can't rule it out either.

Pup,

I was starting to wonder about my 9R, just like you. Even my buddies were giving me crap about the bike- I had went through two belts pretty quickly, speedo failure, wheel bearings failed and stranded my girlfriend and I, then it seemed everything finally was fixed, no problems at all since then, and I ride the thing pretty hard!

18k miles now, and going strong. I guess the "Different in Every Sense" Really applies! Buell riders gotta be committed to their machine, because it applies to the way Buell and The Motor Company do business, too. Hang in there, dude, it'll be worth it in the end. Maybe some straight pipes will help ease your pain in the meantime?
