Just purchased race ECM (thanks XB9). Installed it myself no problem. Then I knew that I had to take the dealer plunge and let them reset the ECM. While I was with the service rep. he says that the timing is very important on an XB and that while it was there it should be checked. this added another 45 min. to the labor time. Did I just spend the required 100 dollars for each visit to HD or was it really needed. thanks for your input.

meanie you shouldn't of had to mess with the timing at all.I didn't have to.

as long as it was set right at the factory when new, it shouldn't change, Owner's manual says to check every 10K

45 min to check the timing is way over the top, they could have done it while doing the tps reset with the computer plugged in, all they had to do was unscrew the timing plug and check it, take maybe 5 minutes all up. If they had to adjust it, take longer, maybe 15 min. Unless there is some secret special formula for checking the timing on a race ecm - reports like this is what really pisses me about some dealers, and driven me to trust none except 2 of them in my whole life. Buy a workshop manual and some tools I say.

If there is another dealership closes enuff to drive to go there. out of all the stuff you hear about the xb's this ain't it. the service rep probably used to sell used cars.

yes timing is important but what was his reasoning behind checking it. were you having running issuses. if not his head was up his ass getting squeezed to tight by the harley gods and blinded by all the shiny chrome parts.

I'd have some fun and go back there and ask to talk to the service manager and ask why the former used car salesman thought that job should be done. and why especially you were charged 45 mins. for a job that has a job time code of 24 mins. why was it doubled.
because they are supreme dumbasses.

What kills me is, how come they make it so hard on themselves. Why is something soooooooo simple made so difficult?

thanks guys for telling me what I already suspected. the bike is running great though and will never go back to that dealer again.I am going to get the manual (like to be a hands on guy). hopefully Dave and his carb setup will trickle down to all of us. No more TPS and no more dealer.

Hopefully Buell will release a tuneable FI to us public riders - I'm envious of some of the Triumph/Aprilia/Benelli owners who can purchase a computer program and cable to allow fuel mapping and ignition curve changes at their leisure for US$310. If Aprilia made a 45 degree twin I'd buy one of their ecm's!

Meanie isnt the first person & he certainly wont be the last to be hosed by a dealer. Judging by a lot of the responses on these types of subjects, I would say the dishonest pricks outnumber the good dealers.

San Diego Harley wanted 100 bucks per wheel to change tires on my XB9R. Lee's Cycles in San Diego did it for 35 each. Everything at Harley must be 100 bucks.
