I was also wondering the same thing! Does anybody use bluetooth? I would like to find some bluetooth speakers for my garmin gps. Do the ones for phones work with gps? Are some only speakers and not mics also? Sorry I only have questions Tonskey!!!!! | ||

I am looking for a corded mic. I had custom made earbuds done by an Audiologist here in Manhattan and they are great but I want to find a good mic to put in my helmet. I figure I can siamese the two cords in some sort of small wrap. What are folks using for mics? Or can you got bluetooth mic and corded ear buds? | ||

Garmins don't do stereo over bluetooth. Next to nothing will. (Look for "A2DP", thats stereo)
Bluetooth phone headsets are Mono. Notice how they only clip on 1 ear? | ||

my palm centro phone didnt do stereo over bluetooth but i was able to find a 15 dollar program on the internet that converted it to do a2dp for my bluetooth headphones...maybe theres something like that available for the Garmin? | ||

I really don't need stereo for my garmin, just to be able to hear the directions. Will one of those 20$ bluetooth headsets work? I really don't want a cord! Jabra or motorola or the like? | ||

Yes they will work. Only thing you need to worry about is your helmet, due to the size of most units, it will not be easy to put your helmet on and off. | ||

Somebody tell me if this is nuts, but here's an idea I've been floating in my brain ... and it's based on the following: It's illegal in VA to get caught having tunes in both ears while riding, my hands are too busy trying to ride when stuff happens to worry about finding a volume control, I don't want wires slapping me when I ride, and riding is MY time - and not the cell phone callers (unless emergency). So I thought about taking an IR transmitter (like the ones in SUV's for the kids to watch movies) and mounting it in the servo motor spot on the top of the inner airbox cover. I'm thinking it would work thru a kick ash cover, and up to the IR eye of a set of wireless headphones. The power to the xmitter would come thru a switch on the right side controls where the heated handgrips switch normally goes, and could be shut off easily. Headphones would be deconstructed and mounted in the helmet (just gotta make a little space for the AAA batteries). Finally, my cell would mount on the handlebars using a clip (eBay item 300302961812), and plug into the xmitter from the headphone jack. My cell cuts out the mp3 tunes when a call comes in, and I can see the caller ID in the window and decide if I want to chat or not. Anyone finding holes in my theory? It should work out as wireless stereo, phone call interrupt and immediate shut down by just a flick of the thumb ... so long as the IR signal can make it thru the cover. | ||

This voice activated or .....do you slap yourself in the head until the switch gets hit? Voice activation is one option or you can set your phone to auto answer. You can also tap the button on the SR Q2 to answer the call. True, there is no stereo mode on the SQ2 but it really isnt necessary. I can hear the music/phone conversations just fine. To me stereo would be a bit much and would be distracting when on the road. Pete | ||

Captcaz, IR is junk, and line of site is required. You turn your head to check a lane and you lose your tunes. If the wires really bug you, go bluetooth or some other form of RF. | ||

If I remember correctly, FM transmitters are pretty noisy. They tend to pick up interference from the engine. | ||

Problem is when you drive any distance that station will get a signal from somewhere and get funky sound. just my experience. Maybe I have a cheap fm transmitter to... | ||

No, he is correct, I forgot about that issue some people have with Autocomms and similar systems, there is a "noise" emission from the bikes that interferes with some radio equipment. Grounding properly can reduce the effect. | ||

I have a xmitter from my old truck which has a couple different freqs to avoid interference, as well as an in-line noise surpressor which cleans the signal up a bit. I did get alternator whine on my truck until I changed the ground to a thicker wire and shorter lead, and it cleared most of it up. I figure with the wind noise in the helmet, I probably won't notice a little static ... just looking for a little background music, not cranking it (minimal distraction while riding). I'll take a shot at it when I get a chance, and if it works I'll start a new thread in case anyone else is interested. Autocom system. Sure it has a cord, but the system works. I don't have it, but I know they have some new Blue Tooth, interfaces, but I think it still all ties back into the main unit and uses a cord to the helmet. | ||

I bought an Autocom system about three years ago and I love it. I have my GPS and Ipod plugged in all the time. When needed I can plug in a Cobra CB or 2 way radio to talk with other riders. I have helmet speakers but I tend to use earplugs which plug into the headset cable. | ||

Here is a cheap way to go. Less than $100 per person. I have used mine for 2+ years and there are some advantages and disadvantages to gong this route. Up sides...Cheap, sounds good, hands free communication, has the ability to talk to passenger and riding buddies, good range, privacy (radios must have privacy channels), music and communication simultaneously. Down sides...It's Corded, no Bluetooth, so no phone or GPS integration, fixed in helmet (I wish I could temporarily install to loan to new friends) That all said here is the system... My cell is in my pocket. I'm riding on my time. I break every hour and a bit anyway so what emergency contact do I need? Text when I'm resting. GPS? I'm happy to get lost. It's an amusing discussion, go for it, but my philosophy is that at a certain point you might as well have stayed in the car. Just thought I'd share that. | ||

+1 Andy. In New York it is illegal to wear earphones in both ears while operating a motor vehicle or bicycle (sec.375 24a). On a personal note, I have always been distracted or in a sense disoriented when wearing headphones any where other than sitting in my house. I can't even wear them around the yard as I feel limited not being able to hear my environment. | ||

I used to think I'd like to listen to some tunes on some longer rides, but with all the decibels of the Drummer, the wind and road and traffic and what not, I'd have to have the volume up so loud I think I'd go deaf way sooner than I'd like, so I choose to wear earplugs, I'll start talking or singing to myself which usually cracks me up. It's nice to disconnect and only think about my ride and all the fun I'm having. I can return to reality, check messages, etc. at rest stops. |
