I am in the market for a XB12scg and a new one with translucent covers is $10,500.00 +/-. The used one's I have seen are around $6,000.00 and have even heard of ones going under $4,000.00 in good condition. Why do these bike depreciate so quickly? Should I hold off on a new one and just wait for a used one to come around? I have never bought a new car, truck or bike for this exact reason. I don't want to buy a $10,000 dollar bike and own a $6,000 dollar bike by the time I get it home.

It's a double-edged sword IMO. You either take the hit up front buying new or on the back end buying used. Buy new, and it's instantly worth 30% less than you paid for it. Buy used and it's worth virtually nothing (because of age) by the time it's paid for and you want to sell it.

The upside to buying new is that there is usually some residual value by the time you have the loan paid off (speaking from the standpoint of financed cars and trucks).

I've never come out ahead buying and selling any vehicle. Broke even or lost some in every case.

Search the cycletrader forums, craigslist, etc. to find a good deal. Be patient. The XB I bought was listed 5 minutes before I logged on. It was a 2007 with 5 miles on it. Never registered or titled. $6899.00 delivered to my door. Since I had a bike sold out from underneath me a couple days before that, I was not going to let this one slip away. Contacted the dealer immediately and slapped down a deposit.
I am sure I can get more for it if I was to sell.

Good luck in your search...

And if your lucky...which I'm not normally...
I found an 04, XB12R for $4000.00 with a little over 4100 miles.
So far...with some tuning work, it seems to be working out well.
It also came with a few extras...

It was even close to home.

Check out the Classifieds. There's an Scg on there for $7700 I think. Has like 700 miles. I think you are seeing the state of the Economy right now. A year ago, these bikes could not be had at such low prices.

Doesn't matter what you buy there will always be depreciation! They way the economy is right now it doesn't matter what you have people are hurtin for cash. Honestly if you are the person who doesn't work on there own bike I would probably buy new since you have the security of a warranty. Never pay sticker on a new bike you can probably buy a new XB for $9k pretty easy.

there is a fine line between priceless and worthless.... I will never sell my bike, I will never get out of it what I put into it, and there is nothing that anybody could offer me to take it off my hands.

Thanks for all the great input. Danxb9r warranty is just a piece of paper. I have always worked on my cars and I am nervous to work on my bike because unlike a car if I break down on a bike in a bad spot or just at the wrong time I can get hurt but I will make it a point to learn. Cityxslicker I have a Mustang that I have put so much into that I couldn't get back half of the time and money invested in it. So she sits in storage waiting for that once in a blue moon saturday night ride where she wrecks havoc on the streets.

Yea your right, but my wife used to work in the service department trying to get claims paid by the manufacturer who would always try and squirm out of paying for one reason or another. Besides I live in the boonies and closest Buell dealer is a 2-1/2 hour drive away so taking it in for every little thing is probably not going to happen.

Two things to consider here:
1. There are often great deals for new bike financing - particularly these days.
2. It is often more cost effective to buy an inexpensive used bike you then customize it to suit you. These are easy bikes to work on.

For a lot of us option 2 is often more fun and satisfying as well!

Bikes, cars, boats, etc., ... they all depreciate the minute you take possession.

I just bite the bullet and buy the bike I want if I can afford it, ... if not I wait until I can.

It is all about the ride, and that is worth a lot to me, ..... a lot more than depreciation.

Love my XB that I bought new in '07.

I bought my current bike used because I couldn't afford what I wanted new. I bought at the peak of the market and it has depreciated a fair bit in the six years I have had her. So...I don't want to sell her. I didn't anyway, and the fact the price would be so low just seals the deal for me. I am saving now for my next bike, but it will be in addition to, not instead of. At least that's the plan today.

If the bike does everything it did when you first bought it, then it's worth what you paid for it all the way up to being priceless. It's all psychological. Depreciation is the used bike buyer's best friend. If the bike still does what it did brand new, including putting a huge smile on your face then what has depreciated? If my bike is not for sale then it has not depreciated. Because of the limited number of these bikes in comparison to other sport bikes from Suzuki, Kawi and Honda, I reckon these bikes will be worth something someday. Much more than you could ever buy one today new. Hold onto them for a bit I say. The XB is the most significant bike Buell ever brought to market in my opinion. and i'd bet that it would trump the sales of the 1125R if they kept the same look and gave it more power. After all this is what we really wanted them to do, right. Instead, the 1125R was built to appease our desires for more power. What Buell missed or ignored is that we wanted the looks of the XB, just updated more than a little bit that's all.
I suggest you start stock piling parts for it now fellas because in 10 to 20 years these things will be keepsakes.

I bought my 03 xb9r with 5000 on the clock for 4,500 Out the door. Talked them all the way down from 6.000 with taxes. Talk about price heckling. It took two days but they finally agreed. that was two years ago. bike WAS in perfect shape.

Go and find yourself a low-mileage $4000 XB9R. They are out there. Helluva bargain.
