Augustus, I believe all of the mufflers for Buells have their own different sound just like car mufflers. Some are deeper than others and some are just plain louder than others. I guess it all the depends on what you're looking for. There are a few youtube clips that actually have good sound quality that may help you. IMO Drummer, Special OPS and Voodoo are the best sounding. They all still give you a "Harley sound", but with a different tone at certain rpm's. Personally, I like the Spec OPS. I found a nice youtube clip of a Uly with a Spec OPS muffler, thing sounded like a beast!! I'll find it when I get home.

Don't want it to sound like your straight-pipe Sportster? Here's a radical thought: Leave the OEM muffler on it.

It has nothing to do with looking hard enough. My 2001 does not have a Harley insignia anywhere. My wifes 09' have the same thing on her cylinders. Now I'm sure for cost saving measures, sure they will do that. My POINT is, the engines may get to the Buell plant as Harley motors, but they don't leave that way. Why do you think Harley doesn't post horsepower specs?
Jaime, good point btw.

I may be WAY off base here, but I thought my bike sounded a lot different just by opening up the air box. But I don't know if anyone else on the street can hear that.

I am under the impression that the engines come fully assembled from the engine plant.

Built to Buell specs. at the Harley engine plant.

Old_man, I believe you're right in regard to the XB engines. I think the tube-frame engines were modified in East Troy, but the XB engines come built-to-spec.

I could be wrong.

So then, the 1125-powered bikes are Rotaxes?

Ok then...enjoy the Coolaid...

Just poking fun, seriously these are HD powered motorcycles so they do have that Vtwin sound but I have NEVER parked next to any HD bike that sounded like my 12R in a parking lot, not before with the stock exhaust and not after mounting the SpecialOPS pipe. People know it isn't a metric bike but they don't ever say "hey, nice Harley"...though I have met more than one HD rider on an old HD bike that says they wouldn't mind putting my engine into their bike.

Stop worrying about sounding like a Harley, it's gonna sound like a Buell. If you can't get over that put a Cherry Bomb or some such auto pipe on it and really get something unusual.
