I hopped on my XB12R this morning to head to work and about 3/4 of the way to work I noticed that the center of the top of the gage pod has melted. It's the black plastic portion that encases the gages. It almost looks as if a hot flathead screwdriver was laid on it and it melted into it. It melted far enough in that there is now a hole in it...

The bike has been garaged so I can't assume foul play unless my friends sister did it when I was over there the other day (she got mad at me and she quit smoking a week ago so there's no telling...). I think I would have noticed it though, it's pretty damn obvious.

Anyway, what's the warranty status on melted gage pods?

dont think you can get a warranty on you r friends sister. you could always buy her a carton of smokes though. she can quit some other time when your not around.

M1, more seriously, are all the electrics functioning normally? there is nothing in there that can generate plastic melting temperatures except 12 volt power, and any of that would ordinarily blow a fuse before melting down. can you positively rule out an external agent?

Well, I thought about it most of the day and that's the ONLY thing I could think of. She's not generally the vindictive type, but I've watched people quit smoking before : ). It's a very "mechanical" looking melt. It has very squared edges and looks to have melted from the inside as there are no places where the plastic squeezed out from underneith a hot objext, no bubbles, no blisters, no strings. It looks as though it got hot at a place where there are thicker areas to both sides and the plastic got hot enough to melt in between them so there's a 1/16'th inch spot where the plastic melted and caved in.

I have no engine light warning, the lights on the guage pod worked last night on my ride home. My idiot lights seem to work just fine, the gages themselves seem to work. It starts and seems to run just fine. There are no indications that a good deal of heat was applied to the outside of the pod...

There's a hole in it though... I'm concerned about water now. I think I'll run over to Mayer H-D after I get off work and see what they think.

I had a double bubble on my RC51 that melted a hole in the dash when parked directly in the sun.It was caused by sunlight shining at the point where the double lip flared. No bull.

I have a double bubble... It was parked in the sun today. Now that I think about it, I didn't notice it on the way to work, it was on the way to lunch, but I took lunch at 11:30 and the bike was facing west. If the girl had done it (maybe with a key?) I certainly would have noticed last night because the hole is near a light source and it very bright. I wouldn't have missed it.

It happened sometime between 8:30 and 11:30 today. The bike was parked in the parking lot of the Yavapai County health department. It's a new building and we were moving all of their PC's from the old building. The only people there were Yavapai county employees and for the most part every one of them I have met has been a pretty good person. It's very rare to hear about some jerk working for the county because they generally tend to get weeded out.

Hmmmm....

It must have happened sitting in that parking lot.

I stopped by Meyer HD and the service manager told me to stop by at noon tomorrow. He'll have someone take a look at it and if there's something in it that heated up he'll warranty it. Problem is, doesn't the bike store it's mileage in that unit? I don't want to lose 1600 miles, I'll have to remember it.

I'll keep you all updated though...

All new Ermax screens now come with a warning in Franglais and a special sticker to go over the clocks--ugly but effective. I guess that Gold-plating the inside of the screen would be better!

Mine only took about 30 min.to do the damage.Always parked it after that with my gloves over the clocks.
Honda would not warranty it.
Oh well it's history now and a xb12s to hammer on! : )

any of you guys ever burn ants on the sidewalk with a magnifying glass when you were a kid? (I know... it's hard to keep the dot on them when they're running... )

Sounds like the sun did the same thing like what Gearloose mentioned.

Hahaha!!! Didn't burn ants but there was this jerk in high school that we used to burn every time he fell asleep outside during lunch.

Didn't need a magnifying glass either. We just borrowed (stole) another kids "coke-bottle-bottom" glasses.

Interesting effect. One kid was jumping and yelling like a frog on fire and the other was blind and walking into traffic, walls, etc.

Ahhh...The things we did for amusement in the early 1960's.
