Maybe I'm just being a worry wart, I don't know, but it seems like I've been having a very small engagement problem going into second gear.
It's really not bad, just occasionally it acts like I didn't pull far enough up and either it hangs in neutral or grinds a little and goes into gear.

My 2nd gear isn't going out is it?

I used to have a road race sentra and put redline synthetic in the tranny and that cured a LOT of grind and shift problems, is this something I could do with the XB?

First make sure the primary chain is adjusted correctly.

Fresh trans fluid will help too.

The tranny oil has less than 200 miles on it. I just installed HD oil.

Should I go with a synthetic? Lot of people on here seem to swear by it.

I used HD in the primary and something that said formula in the tranny. The salesman picked it out.

Your 03 doesn't require the Formula+ in the tranny.

When they cut the clutch pressure on the newer years they had to go with the Formula+.
I think it may have a clutch friction enhancer. (not sure of that fact)

I use Mobil 1 15w50 in my tranny.
No problems.

You should, also, check clutch adjustment to be sure it totally disengages.

Formula plus performs well in my 03. Probably not the source of your problems. I'd bet the primary chain or the clutch cable needs adjustment as stated above. These transmissions are pretty straight forward.

Mine has done that since day one, figured it was fairly normal for these trannys to be clunky.

how quick/slow are you shifting into second?
i put some pressure on the toe peg, and then pull the clutch to shift.
i've sally-shifted a few times and made horrible sounds emminate from the gearbox

I use the Formula + in my '03 XB9S trannie, have set the primary chain and clutch until I am sick of it and still get what feels like gear clash shifting into second from first. I quit worrying about it and now have 45,000 miles on the bike.
