OK, I'l like to keep the stock exhaust on my 04 XB12s (cause I kind-of-like the idea of the servo valve, and i don't have the $$ to buy an aftermarket unit), anyone has ideas/comments on how to get the pipe a tab bit louder without major surgery? Thanks, Frederic.

There are a few aftermarket options that retain the valve, but those require money.

Your only other choice is to open the pipe up and start cutting. Again you don't want that either. Perhaps you can drill a hole in the header.

The cheapest exhaust I have found is the Special Ops which just happens to maintain the valve : ).

Might want to look into that...

I have heard once you start hacking the valve has little to no benefit, which is why the drummer (arguably the best system for the buells) is not using it...

Drummer still shows increase in power and torque in the low end (what the valve is there for) if you map it right.

Thanks all, anyone has tesed/compared the Special OPS to the Drummer? Power gain/noise level? Thanks, Frederic

Go to American Sport Bike and click on the Exhaust Shootout. Dyno and noise comparisons between many pipes, including the almighty Micron : )

Awesome document. Thanks Froggy...now; I need to read, listen and think about it. Actually, I need to decide on what to do first: the pipe, the handlebars or the seat...so many choices, so little $$

Louder?
The Latus that came on my bike was so loud that it hurt my ears.- set off car alarms.
And not a deep pleasant sound.
I made some baffles that I inserted, now a more comfortable ride, and I needn't wear ear plugs.

I don't think you would be happy with something that just made it louder.

Some of the replacement pipes are louder, but the real improvement is in tone not volume.

Your comfort should be your priority. Seat is the easiest thing to change, but with the wide variety you will be buying a few and doing some long haul rides to find what your ass likes the best. What works great for someone might not be great for you. Lurk on the classifieds here, buy and try them all, and re-list the ones you don't like.

Bars, depending on what you are doing may require different cables. You can loosen the 4 bolts holding the clamp down, and then push or pull the bar a few inches no problem.

Pipe is only going to cost money, and cause other issues like needing to adjust the fuel map to get rid of decel popping, and not to mention your neighbors wont like you anymore.

I just wish the stock pipe wasn't so damn heavy, sounded nice, and didn't rust!

Well, I should not have used "louder"...really I meant "deeper", "more aggressive", more "sports-bike-like". The truth is that I commute everyday (50 mns one-way) and I don't really want to ruin my music listening

As for the bars: I have been debating between the Crossroads and some flat bars. I've also looked at the http://www.convertibars.com

And for the seat; it's going to be between a gunfighter and a select...unless I find a smoking deal on a Corbin.

For both of these, I dig Froggy's advise...it's a matter of preference, so it would be best if I could try various options.

By the way, I don't know about rust...here in AZ it's way too dryand already too warm (may be hot for you)
BE SAFE

I love the crossroads and the select seat. Great combo. As for comfort I just got back from a 2400 mile, 6 day trip and I felt a lot better than I anticipated I would feel. I wouldnt change a thing.

Take off your airbox cover and use needle nose pliers to pull the cable That's attached to the servo and zip tie it to a nearby bolt. This opens your exhaust valve and makes a deeper tone at low rpm's for FREE!! Or do the right thing and buy a drummer!

That defeats the point of the servo, hence why I didn't mention it before.

You can drill a couple of small holes in the inner pipe that comes through your tailpipe just where it bends around inside. Some of the gasses will then bypass the longer routing that you get with the valve closed and so will some of the sound. Adds a few dB and a bit more note.

With the stock map it feels like it drops the midrange torque a bit. Nothing's for nothing : )

cut the rear cap off, the end with the tail pipe coming out the side, and follow the tail pipe just inside the can and cut the pipe there then follow it to the bulkhead where the 3 pipes are attached and cut it there also. Youll end up with about 4 inches of pipe taken out. The bulkhead (jacking point, actually) will now have all 3 pipes ending there. The actual tail pipe should now be flush with the inside of the can and look normal on the outside. Now all 3 pipes that run through the can will be exiting thru the tailpipe instead if runnin in a circle back n forth thru the can! hope im not losing everyone here but thats the first mos i did and it made more power and sounds like that's the was they are supposed to sound when new! Not loud at all but atleast you can hear some rumble! And the best part is that when you put in back together it looks stock! If any one has any questions feel free to ask! I'm just tryin to help!!

oops, forgot I posted here..

rpm4x4, do you have the 0 or 7 degrees?

I have the zero degrees. Its the perfect angle for mid to high speeds. At first I thought I wouldnt like them cause I was doing a lot of in town driving and I wasnt used to using those muscles. Now that Im used to them, in town driving doesnt phase me. I cant imagine going back to the cityX bars now.
