SO.... I read that 06 and up XB's have a new improved transmission, meaning helical gears instead of straight gears, to improve smoothness. Is this correct? I had an 05 blast which I assume had the old style transmission with straight cut gears. Compared to my 08 XB, the shifting is EXACTLY the same. Still the hit and miss "grind em till you find em" shift from 1st to 2nd. Sometimes its a good smooth shift, most of the time its a grind. I've tried all the techniques mentioned here. The one that seems to work the most consistent for me is from someone that suggested applying pressure to the shift lever right before you pull the clutch and shift. Yes, its all adjusted according to the manual. I'm wondering why there seems to be no difference between my old blast tranny and the new "improved" XB tranny. Anyone noticed this? | ||

Primary chain adj, lube type and clutch adj make a heck of a difference. I got no grinding. | ||

never? not even occasionally? about the chain, when adjusted properly, should one hear ANY whining at idle when up to operating temp? just a little? none? Too tight and it makes a lot of whine, too loose and it sounds like wooden marbles... Just right sounds like.....??? | ||

Helical gears are for a quieter gear train assembly and they can take a higher torque load - but all at the expense of efficiency (and hence power)... Too bad Buell went away from the cassette transmission. The FIX is a detent plate firmly attached to the drum. The "DAMN THIS WORKS GREAT" option is an XL5 Baker drop in tranny... | ||

Two 06's, mine grinded once or twice, but a quick chain adjust and back to smooth as silk. | ||

The only time I hear any sound from my primary chain is right before I adjust it. My bike talks to me that way. Seriously, no noise. Never any gears grinding either. This is my third XB and it's true for all of them. Sounds like you may have discovered your problem! These adjustments are a little tricky to get right till you become familiar with them. I like to keep my chain just a teensie bit on the loose side. I use formula+ only. I adjust my clutch by the book. | ||

dang..... i can either get a little whine or the wooden marble sound.... there's no in between it seems... what's the deal? clutch is adjusted properly. guess i'll try some formula+ and see what happens.... | ||

now that i think about it, I have no idea what is in my primary since the dealer replaced my cover. last night i found it was WAAAYY overfilled, so I fixed that, but it still has the occasional 1 to 2 grind. | ||
