Just coming back from the beach, almost home when at a light I noticed a whining type noise from the primary on my 04 XB12R. Noise rises and lowers with rpm. Anyone else had this happen? Don't look forward to taking cover off............................................... ......................................

Have you checked the primary chain to see if it's in spec? That's the first thing that I'd do.

+1 on the primary chain.

the "whining type noise" is usually the chain being to tight. have you had the bike serviced lately?

Thanks guys, checking the primary chain was the last thing I'd check. It was adjusted approx 500 miles ago and felt in spec or just on the loose side. Made a 120+ mile trip to "Barnies" last night in Orlando and no noise. Noise started today. Checked chain and it seemed to be slightly tight, loosened and road tested a few minutes ago, seems to be normal again.
????????????????????????????????????????????
Never seen that happen before.

Aldaytona, that also happened to me a little while ago. When I did my 1K service, I fooled with the primary and adjusted it too tight. I should have just left it alone.
Later on, I pulled the bike back into the garage and backed the adjuster off a little and the noise went away.

Never seen that happen before.

Assuming the chain tension had been adjusted correctly before, this is typical for a misaligned/spreaded crankshaft. The tightest point will get tighter, the loosest point looser, because the primary sprocket gets tumbling more and more.
