Well, I finally figured it out Froggy.

I was both:
A) "Doing it wrong" and C) "riding like a p****."

After some parking lot practice, I am now able to loft the front wheel in first gear by chopping the throttle as Jraice said.

To address your concerns Court, I would never do this in any kind of traffic. Yes, I suppose learning to do a power wheelie at my advanced age of 38 may seem fool hearty, but I'm not dead yet, and still have things I want to try before I go. I will continue my parking lot practice until I get more consistent. As of now I don't feel the urge to try this in second gear.

However, next I want to try a stoppie.

Sounds good!

I should hit the parking lot, thing is they are all private and I always get kicked out for just doing u-turns, let alone wheelies. Wonder if the cops could do anything? I dont mind getting kicked out by a friendly security guy after 15min...

Your probably doing better then me! I am still a p*$$y when it comes to wheelies, I tend to wind it up over 4,000rpm to make up for that (more power, dont need as much throttle) but then I run out of rev's.

I always do it on the street though (straight aways in the middle of nowhere Ill sometimes stop and try 3-4)... Parking lot would be fun.

Stoppies are easy, you learn them fast in stop and go traffic! : D

Jraice in Georgia the only tickets that can be written on private property are for reckless driving and or D.U.I.

So the question becomes what constitutes reckless?

I did it by accident today after going one click less on rear preload. A little irritated after a guy decided to make a u turn that turned into a 3 pt. turn in the street right in front of me.

roll on at 10-15 mph and clutch slipping. I was slipping the clutch to both get the rpm up and to try and keep the nose down, obviously I failed at the second goal.
note I did not do an off on throttle transition, the front tire walked its way up gradually, it did not pop up. (it lifted way slower than Froggy's video)
