Have not had the chance to evaluate the heat levels on my 09 XT since I got it at the end of November. But, not working today and being bored out of my skull, I dug out my old stock Road King exhaust system. It has heat shields and one of them fits perfectly over the rear exhaust pipe coming out from under the seat. I rode today for awhile at 48* and noticed that the heat levels on both sides of the motor were about even - again, this isn't summer time, so it's hard to tell. Here are a couple of pix - if this works out, I'll have it powder coated to match the frame even though the chrome is growing on me (my last 3 bikes were black & chrome HD's).

Brian- that looks like a useful addition, but how far does it extend up into the frame? From my experience, the heat problem is what gets transferred to the frame and then to your leg, not the heat coming off the pipe down low like that. If the shield extends up to where the pipe comes out of the head, it may help significantly.

Let us know how it works out when the weather gets hot.

Hugh - that was a concern I had because the shield only reaches to the frame. I may fiddle with it a bit to see if I can get it back further, but don't hold much hope for that because the pipe starts to bend right there. As I mentioned, the heat levels were about the same on both sides of the bike and that was determined by the actual temp of the frame. This, by the way, is a problem with HD Road Kings. I'm also wondering if I am actually trapping more heat at the frame with the shield. One thing I did notice was that the shield does cover some of the pipe that is discolored by high heat, so, maybe it is doing some good. Summer will tell. All comments are most welcome - who knows, maybe we can solve the problem.
