Does anyone know what the widest rear tire that will fit on my 2000 X1 Lightning? They are stock rims and I have Dunlop 170 60 17's on now, can I go wider?

Your rim is designed for the size thats on there now.You can put a 180 on but it won't do anything for you.

10CM wider... Not to be a SMART ASS.... As I understand it you may actually lose "contact patch" because the crown (roundness) of the tire will be more pronounced...

Freyke 10cm is quite a bit, I believe that would be around 4" wider!!!

If you really want to think about the dynamics of roll over. Take 3 different size balls. Mentally intersect the two smaller balls and roll them to one side as if you riding your bike. Get a feel for the line running through the balls. This is the line your frame has. Now replace the larger of the 2 balls with the largest ball of the 3. Repeat the movement and notice the change in the line your frame will have. All riders will tell you of a change in handling when moving to a wider tire. But it differs only in your feel for the change. Some like it. some don’t . Crowning varies with the same tire, depending on the wheel width. Take a fishing rod. Hold it at 2 points move your hands closer or farther apart the curve changes, or crowning. This is how rims change a tire. So the closer you move your hands together the more crowning you will have also the tire grows taller. So the rim also affects the tire. Changing a tire from what came stock changes how you will experience your ride.

If you don’t know why your making a change and what it will do to how you ride. Stick with what the 6 figure a year engineer designed your bike for , or find an expert to advise you on what will work.

Personally I commuted to work on my Sportster and will move to my M2 this year. Also I volunteer my help to a very small Drag Race team. We don’t turn at speed. Also I only will use my Dunlop D208 200/50ZRx17 on the Buell when showing off. Never on rides. I’ll stay stock.

Anyway, a 180 will fit on your stock rim.
I did this on my 2000 M2 and there is a visisble difference, definately filled the fender!!
I did several track days with the 180 and unless you're a very gifted rider I dought you could tell the difference except you won't get over to the edge of the tire as easily as a 170.
If the 180 is the same money and you want the real hot rod hooligan look you can't beat it!!

Gearhead,

With the 180 did you stay with the same profile (60)??

TIA

Some 180/55 series tires are not significantly wider from a viewing perspective than their 170/60 sisters. Theoretically they would be 10mm wider, a scant 0.39" wider. But then when you wedge on onto a 5" rim you lose some of that. 180 series tires are designed for a 5.5" wide rim, minimum. You are not gaining anything other than a permanent set of chicken strips. Even after grinding rearsets and lowsiding on a 180/55 racing rear DOT, it still had chicken strips. Just no way to use the entire tread when it is pinched by 1/2". Don't do it. A wider tire will not increase penis size anyway.

I replaced my original tire with a D207 SportMax 180/55 ZR1 and I won't agrue with Blake that you cannot use the entire sidewall of the tire as I mentioned in my original post.

The 180 installed may not be substantially wider but it really fills the fender and just looks better, in my opinion. As mentioned above if the price is the similair it really adds to the look and at least in my case I got thousands of miles of service out of it with some pretty substantial abuse on the street, Battletrax and at a day track so it's your call.

I really liked the big tire, hot rod look...

When I look at a tire that's too wide for the rim, I don't think it looks good.

My opinion.

When I see a tire put on that's wider, just for looks, and making your bike handle worse, I think "There is someone trying to compensate for a lack somewhere else."

Go to the Dunlp website and compare the actual widths of their D207 or D208 170/60 versus their 180/55 models. Not much difference. But one is designed for a 5' wide rim, the other needs a 5.5" wide rim. Oversize tires are for cruiser show bikes. Why ignore the tire and motorcycle manufacterers' recommendations? I don't get it. Just to have a wider tire, cause it looks better? I had no choice in the racing tires, Metzeler doesn't sell a 170/60, so I went with the 180/55. I now use Michelin, who does sell a 170/60 rear racing tire.

Doesn't the XB9 have the 180/55 as a stock tire? If the XB can have it, then my X1 can too...hehehe...no, I will probably stick with the stock size, it sounds like the right thing to do.

Are all of the PM wheels you see on Buell's 5.5 on the rear? Did they make a 5.5 in the regular wheels?

Thanks

On my P.M. 5.5 inch rim a Dunlop 180 wide D-207 missed touching my drive belt by a few .000"+looked much wider than the 180 Pilot Sport i have on it now, which clears the belt by about 1/4".

well, I went ahead and put the 180/55zr 17 on my X1 and you guys were right, it doesnt really look that much wider than the 170/60, but it does look pretty cool, just a tad bit wider and taller, it's cool...I needed a new tire anyways.
