I changed my motor oil yesterday. I changed it outside in the sun, which i normally don't do, but it was freaking cold in my shop. I was quite surprised that some greenish tinted oil came out. It wasn't all green, but there was some obvious dark green colored oil that came out the swingarm.

Any ideas what this green goo was? I felt the oil and it didn't feel like anything abnormal and there was hardly anything on the magnet. The oil was havoline 20w50 and I ran it for 2200 miles.

Now I wish I had taken a sample, but I decided to run valvoline vr1 racing 20w50 and then have that tested by a lab to see how well it holds up.

Sorry for another oil thread, but this kinda through me.

The only oils that I know of that green in color are some diesel oils and specialty engine break-in oils.

Is this a new bike? It could be just leftover assembly lube.

My only other concern would be, is the oil you are using approved for use with a V-twin engine? The battery charging alternator is inside the crankcase, and runs through this oil. You may be getting cooper in your oil, which may make it look green......someone a little more knowledgeble about such things will correct me I'm sure.

Not new, it has 9800 miles on it. It's regular automotive dino oil. All the oil analysis' i've seen show some copper in the oil on these bikes, but this looked quite concentrated, like a green luggy in the oil.

I had mobil 1 vtwin in it before this, but it was very noisey at idle.

I've seen gear oils that have a green-ish tint to them before because of the sulfur content, but not engine oils- not to say that it's not possible.

Never seen an HDEO that was green however.
I use these in my Duramax and neither have that green tint:
Delvac 1300 Super
Delo 400 and 400 LE

Amsoil 15/40 V-Twin certainly isn't green- that stuff is dark brown.

copper seems the most likely suspect. I would have expected it to be mixed with the oil more and not clumped together like I saw.

I think I will run this oil 1,000 miles and have it analyzed. It's only $3.89 per quart, so not a big deal.

It's not the stator. The stator is bathed in the primary oil, not the crankcase oil.

you sure you didnt have a head gasket go bad. i mean, your antifreeze could be leaking into your oil......

or maybe its a bad spark plug. what brand of fluid do you fill them with?

Well there is no sign of oil in the coolant tank, so I doubt it's the head gasket.

It could be Brad Penn oil. Their oil is "green".
