Does anyone have any suggestions for computers that replace the existing instrument cluster on the XB's? I'm thinking of something along the lines of fully digital readouts, to include gear indication and engine temperature (and fuel level...?).

Also, I've heard some talk about HUDs for motorcycles. I managed to find one unit, but all the websites lead to dead ends, or have no buying information. A HUD for a bike seems like a logical next step when it comes to safety. The less you have to take your eyes off the road, the better. Add to this GPS/location information and it just sweetens the deal.

I'm always looking for ways to make life more complicated.

If anyone has photos of how they've tricked out there bikes in the digital realm, I'd really like to see them.

Veypor VR2. I don't have the HUD addon yet. I use it in addition to the stock instruments.

translogic in the UK makes some pretty nice stuff including a digital gage setup.

I have the previous generation on my bike, it came as part of the shifter package.

Sorry, I haven't seen any really good HUD solutions....yet. They have to be getting close
to ready for prime time I would think with LEDs getting more efficient and brighter all
the time and processing power is getting TINY and cheaper too.

I'd love to no longer need to look down at the gages when riding.

Not that screen. What you do is stop, enable a dyno run or quatermile timer or similar. Hit the button, open the throttle and check your stats at the next red light : D

I haven't figured out how to get those two tests to work. According to the directions, you get up to 60mph, squeeze the clutch and it calculates rate of deceleration and then figured it out the math that way. Not sure why I can't get it to measure.

Cons of the thing: Fuel economy thing is a joke. The unit has only 3 input sources; a magnetic speed sensor I mounted on rear rotor, a RPM sensor I tapped into the ignition coil for, and then it has an accelerometer, but that is useless on our 100hp jackhammers.

Because of those 3 sensors, it figures out your fuel economy mathematically. You calibrate it once by filling it up, telling it how much gas you took, and size of your tank. Problem is, I can get anywhere from 30mpg to 75mpg depending on conditions, and it has no way of figuring out that I am burning more gas. It has a instant MPG reading, but it is useless as it could be totally off.

Also, its not exactly waterproof. I have ridden in downpours with it, but I had to drain it only once though after the unit "froze"

Other than that, I love the thing. Once it is all dialed in correctly it can do just about anything you want.

About the HUD, I don't see any mentions on their site anymore, but it still is available on other sites. Too be honest, I don't need it, but I am going to get it anyway eventually. They don't call me Froggy Farkels for nothing : D

I didn't realize there were so many options out there. I'm really digging that Vapor. For those of you who have installed these, how difficult was it? I'd be interested in finding out how the information is transferred from the system (engine speed/temperature, tires, etc.) to the computer.

Froggy, seeing that I ain't to mechanically savvy, what is the benefit of having Dynamometer capability? Also, do you have a website for the HUD? I am still having issues finding it even with Google.

Installation is easy, now that I did the hard work on figuring out how to do it on our odd bikes.

(I need some better pics)

It picks your speed from a magnet sensor. I have the magnet mounted on the brake rotor near the bearing (not visible here), and the line wrapped around the brake line is the wire for the sensor.


Here is a better view of the sensor and the magnet, note I only used the tape to hold it temporarily. The wire is stiff enough that you can bend it and have it hanging out of sight and work fine.


The thing gets the RPM sensor from a line running to the ignition source. All you do is splice a wire and your golden.





Last, I don't have a photo of at all, but you need power. The unit lacks a switch, so your best bet is to run it off a keyed line like the accessory/Euro light line.

From there its all calibrating the unit, imputing tire sizes, weight, and riding it to calibrate gear ratios. I can fetch the info off my bike to save you the trial and error. : )

I only did it a few times, but it comes with all the software. You just connect the serial cabled from the laptop to the unit, and transfer data similar to how you do it for GPS units or ECMspy.

It is meant to give you an easy way to compare changes you make to the bike. Dyno time can be expensive, it is not designed to replace it, but to give you an idea of how different fuel mapping or other mods affect your bike.

The LED on this thing is bright, I can see it out of the corner of my eye in the day, and at night I am at risk of getting pulled over for impersonating a cop! : )

Froggy, that's awesome. It looks like you've redefined the concept of a motorcycle "cockpit" and upgraded it to "flight deck."

I'll do some more research, but I guess it's safe to assume that most of the computer and instrument clusters we've been talking about here all gather the data in about the same way. Not to oversimplify it, but it does sound a little easier to understand than I thought it would.

I don't suppose any of the mods you did for installation voided any of the warranty, did they? I'm curious to know how forgiving Buell is for these types of things.

That will depend on your dealer. My dealer didn't care, they even told me half the bikes they sell come back looking like a OCC monstrosity, so I didn't even worry. They did bitch about my stuff when I brought it in for stator work, but then I pointed out that the Cop bike has more crap and a weaker stator.
